Artists Archives & Lakeland Open Ceramics Shows Curated by Mary Urbas

Thu 9/20 @ 7-9PM

Fri 9/21 @ 5:30-8PM

Curator Mary Urbas, who is also the director of the Gallery at Lakeland Community College, has been huge fan of ceramics since she was a student at the Cleveland Institute of Art. And while the shows she’s put together take in the full range of media, she has a special love for clay-based work.

That’s why she conceived Clay5: A Clay Tour through Northeast Ohio. It includes five exhibition which feature the work of both national and local artists, put together by three curators: herself, retired CIA faculty member Judith Salomon and recent (2012) CIA graduate Val Grossman, who founded Brick Ceramic + Design on Waterloo.

On Fri 9/21, the Artists Archives of the Western Reserve opens Recast: Curated by Mary Urbas, with a campus-wide opening from 5:30-8pm.

Urbas says, “I chose artists who honor their craft and incorporate the many different techniques of surface embellishments and various glaze applications, into ceramic art that will be hand-built, wheel thrown or sculptural in design.”

Other shows in Clay5 include Woodfired Ceramics of Northeastern Ohio: Curated by Judith Salomon at the Valley Art Center September 4-October 10; Susan Gallagher: Curated by Val Grossman at Brick Ceramics + Design October 5-November 2); Made of Clay: Curated by Mary Urbas at the Gallery at Lakeland September 20-November 2, with an opening reception Thu 9/20 @ 7-9pm; and Ceramic Invitational: Curated by Mary Urbas, at Article/Art in Cleveland October 5-November 2.
