SPACES Panel Addresses Assuring the Safety of Marginalized Communities

Thu 8/16 @ 6:30-8:30PM

While some are complaining that the FRONT International Triennial, currently going on around northeast Ohio, snubs the local community by showcasing artists from elsewhere, SPACES’ contribution A Color Removed engaged community members in its creation and it directly addresses local issues, including in its ongoing complementary programming.

“My Neighbor’s Keeper: Who Is Responsible for My Safety?” addresses the issue of the safety of marginalized communities — those often targeted for hate crimes, such as LGBTQ people, Jews and Muslims. Especially in today’s climate, with a president who has encouraged hate groups, these communities are challenged to create safe spaces for their members. These discussions center on how the larger community can contribute to that effort.

Sharyna C. McCloud of the Peacemakers Alliance moderates. Participants include Ashley Hartman of Recovery Resources, Jazmin Long of Global Cleveland and Phyllis Harris, director of the LGBT Center of Cleveland, and John H. Flores, a professor of immigration history and interim co-director of Case Western Reserve’s Social Justice Institute. It’s free and open to the public.
