Football Players’ Brain Injuries Are the Subject of World Premiere Play Co-Produced by Dobama and Playwrights Local

Fri 8/17-Sun 9/2

The sport of professional football has been rocked by revelations in recent years of the number of former players suffering from traumatic brain injury due to years of being hit in the head. Mental illness, violence, dementia, suicide and early death have afflicted formerly strong, vibrant athletes.

The new play Down by Contact, a world premiere by Les Hunter co-produced by Dobama and Playwrights Local, addresses this issue on a human level. In it a retired player faces his degenerative brain disease as he tries to save the elegant home his athletic career paid for, while his family tries to come to terms with his diagnosis.

The site-specific play, directed by Dale Heinen, takes place at the Tudor House at Gilmour Academy in Gates Mills.

Down By Contact addresses an issue that’s of critical importance, but it does so through a set of characters who are sharply drawn and compelling in their own right,” says Playwrights Local artistic director David Todd. “In addition, the site-specific nature of this show is unique and heightens the immediacy and realism of the live experience.”

Performances run Fridays and Saturdays @ 8pm and Sundays @ 3pm through Sun 9/2. Tickets are $18 for adults, $15 for seniors and $12 for students.
