Author Brian Hassett, who authored The Hitchhiker’s Guide to Jack Kerouac — the only tome written about the “Woodstock of the Beats,” the 1982 Jack Kerouac SuperSummit in (where else but) Boulder, Coorado — visits Visible Voice Books.
Apparently, some amazing and unprecedented things must have gone down at the summit, because John Clellon Holmes said of it, “More of us were together than had ever been together in one place at one time before,” and nothing since.
Hassett’s book features anecdotes, plus transcribed conversations with Holmes, Allen Ginsberg, Gregory Corso, William Burroughs, Herbert Huncke, Michael McClure, Neal Cassady, Edie Kerouac, Abbie Hoffman and many more. It’s billed as a fast-paced storytelling adventure straight through the heart of Beatlandia, and hitchhiking tales from a 3,500 mile journey along with the Beats. For the uninitiated, the whole “Kerouac thing” is explained. Hitchhiker’s Guide also includes the most comprehensive printed exploration of the connection between the Beats and the Grateful Dead.
Hassett has penned works about Kerouac and the Beats for over 30 years, produced Beat-related multimedia events, organized bona fide Acid Tests with multiple bands and light shows, toured Western Canada with the rock band Yes, worked with Bill Graham producing the Rolling Stones 1981 tour and served as executive aide-de-camp at MTV with Tom Freston and Judy McGrath.
The event is free.
