Fans of Johnny Wu, local filmmaker, martial artist and Cleveland Asian Fest co-founder (check back with coolcleveland for details on the Asian Fest May 18-20), have come to expect elaborate comic-superhero Doctor Who genre flicks.
And they should, but this one’s a little different. Wu, who co-wrote Innerself with Carson Parish, brings a comedic theme to the film.
After a lifetime of torment by bullies, main character Ed decides it’s time to become the hammer, not the nail. Ed disciplines his body/mind through martial arts, but as he becomes an expert fighter worthy of contending with own sensei (teacher), he also must face his own inner demons. That’s when he gets kicked out of the school his foil character attempts to take over. Through it all, Ed matures.
We won’t spoil it by dishing on the rest of Ed’s story, but we can say there’s an after-party following the film screening at Atlas Cinemas Lakeshore.
