Hard to believe but the Marilyn Bianchi Kids’ Playwriting Festival, named in honor of one of the founders of Dobama Theatre (she was the “ma”), is now 40 years old.

Each year, kids in grades 1-12 are invited to submit short plays, with winners in each grade level getting to see their play given a professionally directed and performed production. That’s happening this weekend with nine plays being performed at the Dobama

Friday night’s is a benefit performance with an awards ceremony; tickets are $25. The other three performances are free, with general seating.

In addition, there’s a second benefit event taking place at Nighttown Saturday afternoon from 11am-2pm. The brunch on Nighttown’s patio features food, drink and stories about the festival’s four decades. Tickets are $40, and all money goes to support future festivals.
