Quick, name the Best Picture Oscar winner from this year. Now from last year, and the year before that… Guess what? Fifty years from now they very likely will hardly be shown. But in 2068 it’s a safe bet that there will still be Three Stooges festivals, like the retrospective at the historic Canton Palace.
The venue, a gloriously preserved old-time picture palace, presents a feature-length compilation of the rollicking shorts starring Larry, Curly and Moe (not forgetting Shemp and Curly Joe), whose knucklehead slapstick still hold up (maybe even better) in the post-Jackass age.
Amazing fun fact: The Stooges made extensive live tours, including to Cleveland’s Playhouse Square. There exists a glowing letter of praise written by Moe Howard (a very erudite and well-spoken man in real life) in appreciation of how well the venue was prepared for all performing artists.
Doors open at 6:30pm, with live organ serenades. Admission is $6 to the all-ages fun.
