Folk rocker Sixto Diaz Rodriguez’s extensive world travels may just rival those of Carmen Sandiego, the ’80s-’90s series of computer software games that unexpectedly segued to the popular virtual edutainment tool “Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?” for teaching kids geography.
Rodriguez, who goes only by his surname, taught himself everything he knows about how to play guitar. He began his work in Detroit City clubs in the 60s, as the Motor City underwent postindustrial urban decay.
But that was just the beginning.
Rodriguez recorded two studio albums, earned a bachelor’s degree in philosophy, ran for political office, worked in construction and factory jobs, toured Australia and New Zealand, enjoyed being the subject of a 2012 Oscar award-winning documentary Searching for Sugar Man, unknowingly became a star in South Africa (where it was mistakenly rumored he had died), and now regularly tours South Africa, Europe, Canada and the U.S.
Opening for Rodriquez is Allison Pierce. Admission ranges from $47 to $67.
