Butterflies Want to Be Free, as the Cleveland Public Theatre Adapts a Spanish-Language Literary Classic

Playhouse Square grasped for multicultural cred with the recent Gloria Estefan musical On Your Feet. But to see what a Latin-American really looks like, vamonos to the Cleveland Public Theatre for a multilingual stage production En el tiempo de las mariposas (aka In the Time of the Butterflies).

Based on the novel by Julia Alvarez — and drawn from historical fact — the plot concerns the three Mirabel sisters in the Dominican Republic of the not-too-distant past. Following the imprisonment of their husbands by the Trujillo dictatorship, the women become a tragic symbol of political resemblance, identified by the populace as butterflies.

This marks the regional premiere of the drama, performed by Teatro Publico de Cleveland ensemble. All dialogue will be in Spanish, but project English subtitles should assist the gringos. Admission ranges from $12-$30.
