Evenings at Nighttown Explore Sondheim’s “Merrily We Roll Along” Prior to Lakeland Production

Mon 1/8 @ 7PM

Mon 1/22 @ 7PM

The 1981 musical Merrily We Roll Along was not one of Stephen Sondheim’s most stellar successes, running for only 52 previews and 16 performances on Broadway. Based on a 1934 George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart play, it follows in reverse time the trajectory of a former Broadway songwriter who gave up music to become a successful Hollywood producer.

This show will be the subject of a pair of evenings at Nighttown, led by Dr. Martin Friedman, who will direct the play at the Lakeland Civic Theater in February. He’ll talk about why a musical that seemed to have it all — Sondheim songs in a Sondheim-suited storyline of the rags-to-riches-to-regret type that plays so well on Broadway — flopped instead.

Music director Jordan Cooper and the Lakewood cast member will join Friedman to perform some of the songs from the musical. Tickets are $10.
