Ensemble Theatre Takes on the Epic “Angels in America”

Fri 1/5-Sun 1/28

Tony Kushner’s two-part drama Angels in America: A Gay Fantasia on American Themes is meaty theater.

It opened in 1991 in the heart of the AIDS crisis before long-term survival was on the horizon, but unlike most “AIDS plays” or even gay plays, its ambitions were much broader. The two parts, Millennium Approaches and Perestroika, weave numerous characters (including supernatural and historical ones) and story lines into a complex and towering work that incorporates ideas about sickness and death, family and friendship, sex and love, secrecy and authenticity.

Ensemble Theatre in Cleveland Heights starts 2018 by reconsidering this epic work, starting with part one, Millennium Approaches. Celeste Cosentino directs a cast that includes some of the area’s outstanding actors who should be able to make this nearly three-and-a-half hour work engrossing.

It runs from Fri 1/5 through Sun 1/28 Fridays and Saturdays @ 8pm and Sundays @ 2pm. Tickets are $25. Ensemble will present Perestroika in April and May.
