Mariah Carey, you may know, cancelled the Cleveland-area visit of her Christmas tour. Perhaps she had to fly to Stockholm to accept a Nobel Prize for her lyrics — or perhaps she just knew that nothing she could perform would possibly outshine Winterfest in downtown Cleveland.
The Saturday after Thanksgiving turns into an indoor/outdoor all-day celebration centered on the 6pm lighting of downtown Cleveland’s official Christmas tree. Keystone events happen in Public Square and Tower City, but related specials go on in downtown main roads and storefronts along Playhouse Square and further. They include carriage rides and Public Square ice skating, the Harlem Globetrotters, the Ohio City Singers and, following the lighting, a fireworks extravaganza concluding with Nashville recording artist AC Jones in performance.
In commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Carl Stokes administration in Cleveland, Peter Lawson Jones will portray Stokes at the podium, accompanied by Dominick Farinacci & the Stokes Legacy Jazz Orchestra. They will be performing Mariah Carey covers. Okay, that last bit was FAKE NEWS.
Admission is free, though some individual attractions (like the Mr. Kringle Inventionasium) are ticketed.
