Cleveland Dragon Boat Festival Spreads Out to Wendy Park

Sat 8/12 @ 8AM-3PM

The Cleveland Dragon Boat Association sponsors rowing practices as long as it’s warm enough to get in the Cuyahoga River. But the pinnacle of its season is the annual Cleveland Dragon Boat Festival.

In the past the event has been held on the river, with watchers looking on from the Nautica Boardwalk and the patios of bars and restaurants. This year, however, it’s moved to Wendy Park on Whiskey Island where it can spread out and become a real family festival, with food, music, taiko drumming, craft vendors and more.

Fourteen teams of 20 paddlers each will take to the water in groups of three, each colorful boat propelled by a drummer. The three teams logging the fastest times will race for the championship.

It starts bright and early at 8am with a welcome and introductions of the teams, painting of the eyes and blessing of the boats. Racing takes place from 9am-3pm, with an awards ceremony immediately after. Fourteen teams of 20 paddlers each will take to the water in groups of three, each boat propelled by a drummer. The three teams logging the fastest times will race for the championship.

Then you can head to the Whiskey Island Still & Eatery next to Wendy Party for the afterparty, which can last as long as you can hang. We’re betting with that early start time some of the rowers will be going home before 2:30am!
