Weekends on Put-in-Bay are for party crowd but summer weekdays are the perfect time for a relaxing midweek getaway to wander around and check out South Bass Island’s nooks and crannies. On Wednesdays from now until early August, visitors can take a boat to Gibraltar Island, lying just five minutes off South Bass to see the research being done at the Ohio State University Stone Laboratory into the ecosystem of the lake and visit the Jay Cook mansion, built by an early owner of the island who was a major financier for the Union during the Civil War.
Another attraction on Put-in-Bay is the butterfly house at the Perry’s Cave Family Fun Center where you can sit quietly on one of the butterfly-themed benches and exotic, colorful butterflies will land on you. Rent a golf cart or a bicycle and amble around; you’re sure to find something fun to do.
