The one-act opera Zanetto by Pietro Mascagni, best known for the far more often performed Cavalleria rusticana, first appeared onstage in 1896. The 40-minute piece, featuring only two singers, is a snapshot of a fleeting encounter between wealthy hotel mistress and a wandering minstrel who find in each other their ideal lover but cannot hold on to their love.
Cleveland Opera Circle is presenting the work with soprano Dorota Sobieska as Silvia the hotel proprietor, and mezzo-soprano Megan Thompson as the minstrel, with Jacek Sobieski on piano. They’ll perform in a variety of venues, starting this Friday and Sunday with a pair of performances at the Shrine Church of Saint Stanislaus in Slavic Village.
They’ll also perform it at the Transformer Station Fri 11/11 @ 7:30PM; Sat 11/12 @ 7:30PM at the East Cleveland Library; Sun 11/12 @ 3:30PM at St. Casimir Church; Sat 11/19 @ 7:30PM at the First United Church of Christ in New Philadelphia; Sun 11/20 @ 3:30PM at the Akron-Summit Public Library; Wed 11/30 @ 7PM at Nighttown; Sat 12/3 @ 7:30PM at the Barlow Community Center Theater in Hudson; Sun 12/4 @ 3PM at Valley Lutheran Church in Chagrin Falls; Sat 12/10 @ 7:30PM at First Baptist Church in Shaker Heights; and Fri 12/16 @ 7:30PM at Saints Peter & Paul Church in Youngstown.
