With Lake Erie sitting on its northern side, it’s a natural for the Great Lakes Science Center to present a weekend dedicated to science and economic impact of the Great Lakes.
The two-day Great Lakes Adventure Weekend offers tours of the Steamship William G. Mather, moored just outside the museum, including special hard-hat tours that take visitors behind the scenes to show what life was like for the ship’s crew (advance reservations a necessity); regular tours are also available.
Meanwhile, inside the Center, on the Mather and outside on the harbor (weather permitting), there’ll be activities designed to teach about aspects of water, shipping and shipbuilding that are inextricable connected to the Great Lakes. They range from creating a duct tape cargo ship to learn about buoyancy for the youngest kids to a demonstration of underwater remotely operated vehicles that have explored the depths of Lake Erie.
Except for the Mather tours, all activities are free with regular admission to the GLSC.
