Gay Marshall grew up in Cleveland where she first started to sing and act. As a young adult, she stumbled on a book about Edith Piaf, the Parisian chanteuse of the ’40s and ’50s known equally for her tragic life and the songs she wrote and sang that reflected it. She says that “truly changed my life … it became my mission to sing them myself.
Although she’s performed in musical theater and sung jazz and pop standards as well, Piaf has always remained a lodestar. She even spent some time living in Paris to absorb the culture and language. In 2008, she put out an album of Piaf tunes including her well-known “La Vie En Rose” and Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien.” And she’s toured extensively, doing her Piaf set in nightclubs.
Now she’ll be bringing it all back home to Nighttown, where she’ll perform ‘Piaf: Queen of Heart,” accompanied by Dan Maier on piano. Tickets are $25.
