Visual arts quarterly CAN Journal held its annual fundraiser at the 78th Street Studios, allowing local artists, gallerists, arts organization honchos and friends to not only support this important voice for the arts but to channel their inner diva while doing so. Taking the stage to a karaoke set-up, they didn’t just sing — they PERFORMED, with rousing results. Galleries/sculptor Loren Naji and friends delivered an oblique commentary on his bust for serving alcohol at openings — a standard gallery practice for decades — with a rowdy version of the Beastie Boys’ “Fight for Your Right to Party.”
Other crowd favorites included the Zygote Press ladies disguised as hippies doing two love/peace-era tunes, “White Rabbit” and “Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In,” and Maria Neil Art Project co-owner Adam Tully delivering a WAY over-the-top campy version of Donna Summers’ “Bad Girls.”
The judging panel of artists Josh Usmani and Arabella Proffer and Beachland owner Cindy Barber chose winners in several categories, who each received a trophy handmade by artist Dan Depew.
