Local crops from Northeast Ohio growers and food producers are the focus in the food at Crop Bistro & Bar. It was opened by Chef Steve Schimoler, who emerged as one of the area’s leading advocates for seasonal, local foods, working with farmers and producers around the region. In 2016, however, he chose to step away from the restaurant business after expanding perhaps too rapidly, closing his outposts in University Circle and his complex on the East Bank of the Flats.
Local restaurateurs Tony George and Marcelo Fadul (of Brasa and Mallorca in the Warehouse District) took over lease of the original location across from the West Side Market, inheriting a beautiful space, built as a bank in the 1920s, that features the high relief-painted ceilings, two-story arched windows and murals, and original marble panels repurposed as the bar top. They continued Schimoler’s focus on quality ingredients and seasonal menus and added a Sunday brunch.
