Explore Afrofuturism in Three Online Programs

Thu 5/20 @ 7PM

Fri 5/21 @ 6PM

Sat 5/22 @ 2PM

Tonight, Thursday May 20, moCa Cleveland and ThirdSpace Action Lab start a three-evening virtual series called Spaceways, on the topic of Afrofuturism and its influence in creative practices in the present.

The discussion will feature artists in a variety of disciplines: mixed-media Aerist Dakarai Akil, filmmaker Imani Dennison and poet/educator Daniel Gray-Kontar. Co-founder and creative director of ThirdSpace Action Lab Mordecai Cargill moderates a discussion on “the multidimensionality and fluidity of Afrofuturism.”

On day two, Friday May 21, they’ll screen Space Is the Place, featuring experimental jazz musician Sun Ra (1914-1993), whose career was built on the created persona of a traveler from Saturn. Finally, on Saturday May 22, the program will screen Nuotama Bodomo’s Afronauts and Imani Dennison’s NO MAS – Irreversible Entanglements, currently on view at ThirdSpace Action Lab as a part of moCa’s Imagine Otherwise exhibit taking place at three venues. Following the films, Nuotama and Imani will discuss filmmaking, Afrofuturism, and how Sun Ra influenced their work.

The events are free but registration is required. Go here.
