Cleveland Heights-based Renaissance music duo Mignarda Ensemble has been around 15 years, although they’re not as well known as some other small Early Music groups in the area. Lutenist Ron Andrico and mezzo soprano Donna Stewart met, according to their bio, while “singing Gregorian chant & renaissance polyphony in a small schola for a weekly Latin Mass.” Quickly forming their collaboration, it continues, “they soon retreated to a remote log cabin in the wilderness of the Siskiyou Mountains to immerse themselves in the repertory and the aesthetic of the 16th century.”
If they haven’t been on your radar either, and you’d like to check them out, they’ll be performing a program called Byrd Songs at the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, where they’ll be joined by soprano/cellist Malina Rauschenfels and baritone Jose Gotera. It features sacred polyphony and devotional songs by late 16th century/early 17th century British composer William Byrd (1543–1623), as well as music by some of his contemporaries. Among the selections is Byrd’s Mass for Four Voices.
The concert is free, and there’s free parking in the Cathedral garage off Rockwell.
