The Brentano String Quartet, formed in 1992, are named for Antonie Brentano, the woman believed for years by many scholars to be Beethoven’s unidentified “Immortal Beloved.” The group quickly established itself in the forefront of string quartet music, winning the first Cleveland Quartet and becoming inaugural members of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center’s Chamber Music Society Two. And in 2014, they were named quartet in residence at Yale University.
In addition to the standard quartet repertoire, the group also reaches back to the pre-quartet era for music and forward to commission works by contemporary composers.
They recently performed at Oberlin and now they’ll be coming back to northeast Ohio to perform at Akron’s E.J. Thomas Hall for the Tuesday Musical Association’s final concert of their 130th season. They’ll be playing Aaron Jay Kernis’s Air for Flute and String Quartet, and pieces by Mozart and Shostakovich.
Tickets are $25-$45; students of all ages are free.
