Dulcimer Player Alex Lubet Blends Asian and Jewish Music at Kent’s Standing Rock Cultural Arts

Sun 5/13 @ 7:30PM

The “Around the World” series presented by Kent’s Standing Rock Cultural Arts offers an intriguing musical fusion for its next program, “East: Asian and Jewish Music for Mountain Dulcimer.”

Dulcimer player Alex Lubet is a distinguished professor of music, American studies, Jewish studies and bioethics at the University of Minnesota. His program will include new works for dulcimer written for him by Asian composers including Chinese composers Ziwei Shi, Mingzhu Song, Chuxiang Wang and Yan Pang, and debuted last year, Indonesian composer Gian Pujakusuma South Korean Soojin Lee and Japanese-American Iris Shiraishi — most being played in this country for the first time.

He’ll round out this cross-cultural journey with his own compositions, which draw on his own Jewish heritage. Lubet will be joined for the finale by a musician familiar to Kent world music fans: Mike Hovancsek, who will play koto and percussion.

The concert takes place at SRCA’s North Water Street Gallery. Prior to the performance at 7pm, there’s a meet-and-greet with light food and drinks. It’s a $10 suggested donation (or pay what you can), and for a $15 donation ,a copy of Lubet’s latest CD Deep State is included.
