We Can Be Heroes

In fact, we already are. This week’s issue is full of heroes.

We celebrate the death of an artistic icon two years ago today. But join us this Friday or Saturday to celebrate the life and music of David Bowie at one of the region’s finest venues, the BOP STOP. Read the story below about DigitalC and how their Connect the Unconnected program provides high speed Internet to CMHA homes. Check our interview with Jessica Davis about Rebuilders Xchange in the Hamilton Collaborative where Ingenuity and a growing group of startups call home.

Not many people know that some of our finest citizens, even some of the management right here at CoolCleveland, once ran with the Singing Angels, and this week they’re holding auditions for the next generation. The Orchestra does Mahler, Doubting Thomas opens a show featuring only one man, and Kent’s Standing Rock Cultural Arts showcases Ukrainian bandura music with live performance and film.

Got cabin fever from the nasty weather? Step outside and embrace some real local heroes. Just for one day. –Thomas Mulready

David Bowie’s Berlin Era has fascinated critics and fans for decades: riding high on the success of Young Americans, the artist hooks up with fellow addict Iggy Pop and relocates to Berlin to clean up (improbably, it works) and create some of the most acclaimed music of his storied career, the albums Low, “Heroes” and Lodger. CoolCleveland’s cultural impresario Thomas Mulready returns on Fri 1/12 with a in-depth and entertaining peek behind the scenes, David Bowie: The Berlin Era, informed by recently released and rare box sets, video and needle drops. Tickets.

The following evening, Sat 1/13, the audience is treated to Bowie’s entire fascinating life, An Evening With(out) David Bowie, in two parts, at 7:30PM and 9:30PM- see both for a discount. Each evening is punctuated with a blistering live set or two by Cleveland’s glam heroes, Vanity Crash, showcasing their 2017 release, Phantasmagoria, featuring pianist Mike Garson, Bowie’s longtime accompanist, alongside Bowie favorites and period classics. This show sells out, so secure your seat now. Tix.

DigitalC has only been around a year and a half, and won’t open its co-working space, Midtown Tech Hive, until next month, but it’s already done a lot. It’s piloted its Connect the Unconnected program to provide high-speed Internet in places like CMHA homes. Its ReStart program gives people the skills to use that connection.

“Our mission is largely to catalyze technology for community impact, or to leverage technology for community impact,” says Liz Lazar, head of its Technology in the Neighborhood program. The group is sharing information about its projects at Beer at the Barn at the Dunham Tavern Museum in the Midtown Corridor. Wed 1/17.

Rebuilders Xchange, which opened last year in the fast-growing Hamilton Collaborative complex, offers a jaw-dropping 70,000 square feet of salvaged materials – furniture, doors, windows, flooring, radiators, bathroom fixtures and more. Owner Jessica Davis built on the ReStore concept at Habitat for Humanity, which she used to work for.

Jessica shares with John Benson how she grew this business and we share with you a glimpse at some of the treasures you’ll find in the huge warehouse.

Race and gender justice activist Nontombi Naomi Tutu, who draws upon the challenges of growing up black and female in apartheid South Africa to lead others, is the keynote speaker for the 28th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration, sponsored by Baldwin Wallace University in conjunction with the Berea community.

The daughter of Archbishop Desmond Tutu has followed her own path in building a better world in both Africa and here in the U.S. Her talk on Tue 1/16 at 7PM is FREE and open to the public as part of BW’s Enduring Questions: The Mark Collier Lecture Series. More info here.
