06.21-06.28.2017 Summer Solstice

Summer Solstice

Things are turning around. We’ve reached the point where the pendulum starts to swing back. You felt it start to happen when all eyes turned to our region last summer. And now everything is different.

We’re all jazzed up for the 38th Tri-C JazzFest, Dan Wilson’s live recording at Blu, and violinist Maureen Choi at BOP STOP as well. We’re ready to stay out of doors all day long at Mulberry Creek’s herb fair, the Countryside Farmers Market at Howe Meadow, the Akron Honey Company’s Market Day, and Steve Dettlebach at Chautauqua in Chagrin. The outdoor fun continues at night with violin & harp at Happy Days Lodge, Akron Art Museum’s Downtown@Dusk, or swing dancing under the stars at PHS with Get Hep Swing.

And it might be the perfect year to celebrate the solstice today dancing to Carlos Jones at CVNP, taking a sunset hike at South Chagrin Reservation, or sitting on the transcendent Solstice Steps in Lakewood Park where this photo was taken a day or so ago. Did you happen to see David Bowie perform live in Cleveland? Tell us your memories, then catch our show next week to hear more. Time to turn things around. –Thomas Mulready

It could be said that Bowie’s career wouldn’t have been the same without Cleveland. Our region caught on quickly, and never let go. We’re mounting David Bowie in Cleveland: 1972-1983-1990, a photo exhibit by Anastasia Pantsios featuring rare and unseen photos of Bowie’s performances throughout his career. The exhibit is free with the show, “An Evening With(out) David Bowie,” on Fri 6/30 & Sat 7/1 at the BOP STOP. If you caught Bowie live in Cleveland, send us a note (Info@CoolCleveland.com), and we may include your anecdote in the show.

The tiny Cleveland jazz club is the perfect venue to experience this show: the sight lines are brilliant, so you can see the rare video and photos from every phase of the artist’s career. The stellar acoustics let you hear the nuance of the unreleased music, the rare tracks, and the live music sets by Vanity Crash. There’s food and drink available all night long.

The only catch? The BOP STOP is so intimate, the show keeps selling out. Get your tickets early and join us for Part 1 at 7:30PM and Part 2 at 9:30PM (get a discount and stay for both), presented in full on Fri 6/30, then repeated on Sat 7/1. Hey, that’s far out so you heard him too!

For more than a decade, entrepreneur/catalyst Shelly Gracon has been part of a whole series of arts/culture/political events and projects in town, many of which she’s spearheaded. Now, under the name GLO, she’s creating arts incubator spaces such as Lab Studios to provide space for creative people with alternative ideas.

Many of those people come together in the Garage Series of special event evenings at Lab Studios. Gracon talks to John Benson about the urban arts scene and what she hopes her projects can do to nurture it. Fri 6/23.

SPONSORED: Regional Acts Featured Outdoors at Tri-C JazzFest There is more to Tri-C JazzFest, presented by KeyBank, than just great jazz concerts in Playhouse Square. Friday and Saturday of the festival, 17 regional bands will perform free outside Playhouse Square on the Strassman Insurance Stage. Don’t miss it! JazzFest is June 22-24, rain or shine. Tri-c.edu/jazzfest.

Since consolidating all its events at PlayhouseSquare in one three-day period, the Tri-C JazzFest has become a true community celebration. There are the formal concerts, of course, taking place inside the surrounding theaters, with jazz to satisfy tastes from the most serious to the “smooth.”

But there’s also a free street party with food, kids’ activities, cooking demonstration, performers of all types, and music in both jazz and non-jazz. And you can hear the talented kids in Tri-C’s jazz camps strut their stuff too. Thu 6/22-Sat 6/24.

When Erin Slater’s sister committed suicide last year after a long battle with mental illness, the family was too devastated to have a memorial. But Erin and her friends are doing it now with their Parrot Head Run along the river in the Flats.

“We founded this race to remember my sister for who she was and not her disease,” Erin says. “She enjoyed a long list of pleasures in life, including the music of Jimmy Buffet.” It benefits Fostering Hope, which addresses youth mental illness. Sat 6/24.

Before you can head out on the highway, you gotta get that motor running. And with an older bike that usually means tinkering, and lots of it. And urban cyclists may not have a garage or driveway to tinker in.

Enter Skidmark Garage. The community garage provides space, tools and a fellowship of other old bike enthusiasts to offer advice and a hand while jamming to some tunes. Founder/owner Brian Schaffran tells us how he came up with the idea and about the value of hands-on mechanical work.

You have to see it to believe it. Tens of thousands of otherwise normal Lego bricks have been creatively fashioned by artist Sean Kenney into a menagerie of insects, animals, flowers and even full sized humans.

Nature Connects: Art with LEGO Bricks is on display throughout the Cleveland Botanical Garden, inside and out, until Sun 8/27. CoolCleveland connected with the CBG’s Cynthia Druckenbrod to have a peek at these 13 incredible sculptures, comprising a total of 500,000 LEGO bricks, plus the hands-on activities, stay-and-play stations and contributions from area artists.

A City Hall rumor has it that, even if I win the council seat for the 7th Ward (which I’m going to do hands down), I won’t be able to claim the position due to my felonies from a quarter century ago. Not true. I’m running to get Cleveland’s 7th Ward back on track, and you can help me (even if you don’t live in the ward.) We’re hosting a fundraiser on Thu 6/29.

* More on the Mayor’s Gun-Totin’ Grandson I’m streetwise enough to know who and what I’m looking at: this young dude is totally enmeshed in ghetto gangland and weed culture. Indeed, his stature as the grandson of the mayor affords him …
