Our region’s biggest asset, and the one thing, besides LeBron that I guarantee the rest of the country covets, is our proximity to 20% of the world’s fresh water. Our multi-part series, Our Water Webs debuts this week. The theme continues with an interview with the champions of a cool vertical hyrdroponic greenhouse right Downtown at the Galleria. Even Mansfield is greening up. Our Soundbite Laureate returns with a commentary on the banking crisis, Gay Marshall releases a new CD, we talk with a Clevelander who dances with Pilobolus, and Roldo reminds us of May 4, 1970. The more we look at it, the more we all need to green up. –Thomas Mulready

Our Region’s Water Lifeline

Part 1: Your Watershed: Exploring the Silent Highway

How often do we think about where the water we use and drink is coming from?

Filmmaker David Smeltzer, a Kent State University journalism professor, is finishing a Northeast Ohio film examining the relationship between communities and the water beneath them.

Two weeks before Earth Day, Smeltzer gave students, teachers and professors a taste of his upcoming documentary, “Watersheds, Water Webs, Why Should You Care?” at the Great Lakes Science Center’s Water Summit 2010.

The idea behind the documentary is the classic idea of thinking globally but acting locally, Smeltzer said, showing how a local issue such as the Nimishillen Creek Watershed can help influence a global issue…

Gardens Under Glass
Sustainable & Edible

Confession: I love this project. When Galleria marketing director Vicky Poole and Jack Hamilton of Artist Review Today magazine and gallery, also located in the Galleria, approached the Civic Innovation Lab for funding, I couldn’t wait to see how they’d pull this off: a vertical hydroponic greenhouse right in the center of Downtown Cleveland, growing specialty produce for area restaurants and gourmets. An educational center and related marketing business offering affiliation with sustainable economic development will help to bring awareness to the issues of urban gardening and alternative energy.

Next thing you know, Fast Company magazine picks up on it. Nice. And now Vicky and Jack are ready to harvest their first crop of lettuce, herbs and greens, as you can see when you watch the video. Anyone interested? Restauranteurs, gourmands and related sustainable businesses looking to affiliate with Cleveland’s new Downtown Eco Village should get on board. Traders and Traitors
Time to Model Banks After Prisons

If you’ve ever toured a maximum security prison and had the opportunity to experience first-hand the secure quarters used to confine inmates, chances are you came away impressed with the same overriding sentiment that I did.

Rather than beauty or transcendence or architectural elegance, it was obvious that the builders had predicated every design decision to support one single priority – security.

They started with the fundamental underlying assumption that whatever furniture, substance, or material was present in the cell – no matter how benign – the inmate WOULD attempt to use it for evil.

Every switch, screw, and spring, every mechanism and mattress, every faucet, pipe, pillow and headboard must be weighed and considered within the context of the criminal mind, the criminal mindset, and the criminal intent default and ask, “How could this be used for evil…?”

Green Up!
Plus, Gangs and Guns

My “orphan fruit tree” program is moving right along. Rather than plant an orchard and wait the five or six years for the trees to bear fruit,

I want to “adopt” the fully-grown abandoned fruit trees that sit in vacant lots and behind houses. If these trees are pruned and cared for they will produce edible fruit this fall, and once the fruit is picked I’d like to dig the trees up and move them all to one site to create an “instant orchard.”

If there are enough trees located, we could establish orchards on numerous sites. Any of you readers who know of — or have — a fruit tree that has not been cared for, let me know about it…

It all started back in 1971 with some Dartmouth College jocks who had only just begun taking modern dance classes. Since then, Pilobolus Dance Theater and its offshoots, Momix, ISO, and Apogee Arts, have been performing highly original, physical theater the world over.

How do the members of Pilobolus develop their extraordinary skills? What’s it like to perform with Pilobolus? What to watch for in the upcoming Pilobolus concert at Playhouse Square?

To find out, we spoke with Chris Whitney, a Cleveland native and a member of Pilobolus.

Cool Cleveland: We hear that you’re a local, a Cleveland Heights High graduate and that you started dancing with Bill Wade’s Inlet Dance Theater.
Chris Whitney: That’s right. Bill gave me my first dance class ever.

What year did you graduate from Heights High?
CW: 2001, then I spent 2 years dancing with Inlet as an intern before I started at Ohio University.

You’re not the first person that Bill has sent off to Pilobolus.
CW: Right. Bill also trained Cleotha McJunkins, who came from the YARD.

You went to China and did Shaolin training?
CW: Yes. I got some grants from school as part of my research for a thesis on Brazilian capoeira, Chinese kung fu, and American modern dance…

Gay Marshall
Gay Marshall Sings Piaf: La Vie L’Amour

Gay Marshall is, amongst many things, a Cleveland original, even though she hasn’t lived here for years.

She is a much of a product of the arts scene in our city as anyone who has gone on to big things.

She started taking acting classes at the Cleveland Playhouse when she was nine, went away to boarding school and college, then returned to start her singing career at various venues around town before leaving for Paris, where she lived for twenty years…

Euclid Avenue Blocked: May 4, 1970

Not everyone knows or remembers that Case-Western Reserve University was a center of anti-war and peace activities during the long Vietnam War. I remember because, although I wasn’t a student, I spent a good deal of time on campus.

On May 4, 1970 I remember being in my car when I heard news of the Kent State shootings on the radio. I don’t remember where I was going. I do remember changing my direction.

I drove my car to the CWRU campus.

It’s hard to believe that it was 40 years ago tomorrow. It’s difficult to believe that we as a nation are engaged again in far off war – this time two wars…

Thank you for your great event list Thank you Cool Cleveland for posting otherwise unknown events around town. Your listing of the University Circle Home Tour for Sunday, April 25 gave us a look into Cleveland’s past, present and future. We really enjoyed the homes and condos on the tour and each home owner or condo manager welcomed us with warm hospitality. Also thank you sponsors for allowing this program to happen. How we wish more people would have known about it and joined the walking tour. We then enjoyed a great dinner in Little Italy.
