Voices

You can hear the voices if you listen. The voices of homelessness, answered by the Poetry Book Project, the voices of women transitioning into the workplace with the help of Dress For Success, the nascent voices encouraged by Write Left: A Salon Workshop for Writers and Thinkers, the voices of young musicians like Tom Evanchuck, full of raw talent. We’re listening to voices in Cool Cleveland with features on these projects and many more: the Raffle Jam at Ray’s MTB, a climate change talk at CMNH, a fair housing celebration and art exhibition at Trinity Commons, the sweet sounds of the Tri-C JazzFest. These voices are all around us. What are you listening to? –Thomas Mulready

Raffle Jam @ Ray’s
Ray’s MTB end of season super bash

Over the past seven years, Ray’s MTB, an indoor BMX and mountain bike park, has become an oasis from Northeast Ohio winters. Located off West Boulevard in Cleveland, the expansive warehouse-turned-weekend warrior and dirt jumper haven has attracted youth and adults alike.

As another season comes to an end, Ray’s MTB has booked its first-ever inaugural Raffle Jam on Sat 4/30 and Sun 5/1, a customer appreciation event of sorts. CoolCleveland talked to Ray’s MTB Assistant Manager Jeff Genzen about the unique event and the facility’s popularity… Read more from John Benson here

When it became evident that Kasich was going to ram through legislation to take away collective bargaining rights from unionized workers, meetings began to spring up to organize opposition to this assault on the middle-class. One such meeting was held early-on at Fatima Family Center in Hough.

Curious, I stopped in to see how well attended it was, and, not surprisingly, the room was packed…

I wouldn’t call the sound reverberating from Bad Racket Recording Studio’s door “racket.” Take approximately two minutes and check out this snippet of Tom Evanchuck, Cleveland’s on-the-rise folk artist. Chardon native Evanchuck is releasing an EP on Sun 5/1 — it’s music you’ve been waiting for, but may not have realized. The EP, entitled Nebby Thomas and Zrenner Lewis, is just three songs. With an untampered sound and folk appeal, Evanchuck is raw talent. Soak in these three songs and sit in anticipation for his dual album release Sat 5/21 @ Beachland Tavern.
