The Count Basie Orchestra Will Be Jumpin’ at Nighttown for Four Performances

Wed 11/15 & Thu 11/16 @ 7 & 9PM

Legendary pianist/band leader Count Basie may have died in 1984, but his big band, the Count Basie Orchestra, lives on.

His music was one of the reigning sounds of jazz from the mid 30s all the way into the 60s with its lively jump beat and horn-propelled blues vocals, provided at different times by singers such as Big Joe Turner, Joe Williams, Jimmy Rushing and Billie Holiday. It was known for tunes such as “Jumpin’ at the Woodside,” “The One O’Clock Jump” and “Goin’ to Chicago Blues.”

The Legendary Count Basie Orchestra has continued to keep that seminal sound going more than 80 years after the band was formed, directed by jazz trumpeter Scotty Barnhart who was born 50 years after Basie. Versatile vocalist and Jazz at Lincoln Center regular Brianna Thomas will provide the voice for those classic vocal tunes, performed with the 20-piece orchestra, which will somehow cram itself on the Nighttown stage.

They’ll do four performances over two nights. Tickets are $40.
