Unexpected

The closer you pay attention, the more surprised you’ll be. Even with the bar being raised regularly around here, we’re amazed at how the Cleveland area is unexpectedly overachieving and pushing forward.

Neon talent Jeff Chiplis’ art is seemingly simple yet complex at the same time (“dazzling, frigid”); catch our feature and his opening at Busta this week. At another end of the spectrum, Molly Pamela installs Heavy Petals at BUCKBUCK: her revealing interview is below. The Callaloo Cafe & Bar is officially open on Waterloo, The Devil’s Music opens at CPH, Winter Brite Festival returns, NWT throws a sock hop at Trinity, and there’s death pop/electronica at Pat’s in the Flats. Oh, and another lucky mobile app user won $20. As expected.

And yet, with all this creativity swirling around, commentator Richey Piiparinen thinks “Creative Class” is too narrow an ambition for Cleveland. That’s unexpected. Or was it? –Thomas Mulready

Neon Talent
Jeffry Chiplis Grows His Ambition & His Audience

Cleveland-based neon artist Jeff Chiplis is debunking the old adage “lightning never strikes the same place twice.”

A decade ago, some art-world buzz around his work constructed from repurposed found neon netted him a show at New York City’s White Box Gallery.

He did not instantly become the next big art star…

Expressing the Unexpected
Molly Pamela’s Not Shy in Heavy Petals

Remember the ’70s television commercial for Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups where one unsuspecting fool would inadvertently put their chocolate into peanut butter?

Well, that’s sort of what Youngstown native and Lakewood resident Molly Pamela has in mind regarding her debut installation Heavy Petals, which appears Sat 2/16Sat 4/6 @ BUCKBUCK…

The question of how you “become” as a city has been weighing on me lately. Is it enough to get people back in the emptiness? Is it enough to pretty the derelict?

I mean, is the trajectory of Cleveland’s success simply a collection of micro-everythings, start-ups, and occupancy rates? That is, is Cleveland’s reward simply the benefit of being creatively classed?

I hope not. It won’t work. Here is why…

Hot Music in the Cold
The Return of Brite Winter Festival

Three years ago, a couple of Case grad students had the idea to get several bands they knew to play outdoors on the banks of the Cuyahoga River — in February.

With a couple of bonfires, some games, and a nearby Italian restaurant for warmth and food, they had themselves a little festival…
