Risk

There’s no growth without risk. Are we getting too safe? It’s a question worth asking, but the people here are planting seeds and putting it all on the line.

Patrick Ciamacco didn’t start Blank Canvas to mimic other theaters. But new seats will make their audiences squirm a little more comfortably. Help them pay for performance rights at their benefit. And photog Eric Rippert is risking a new approach in his show at Maria Neil.

We think there’s opportunity in our CoolNEIGHBORHOODS, so we recently opened Amherst and Lorain County. And the AAM celebrates the Merriman Valley neighborhood in Akron with free admission at their Downtown@Dusk series this week.

Take a stab at something new, put down your phone and try out Dr. Will Tuttle’s World Peace Diet at the CH-UH Library; help inaugurate the new gallery at KSU by checking out Dexter Davis’ show; attend Birds, Beasts, Brats and Beer to get a close up look at CMNH’s new Wildlife Center and Woods Garden; or march with Marcia on Labor Day. I’m willing to bet there’s not a challenge we can’t take on. –Thomas Mulready

Photographer Eric Rippert has long been known in the fine arts community as someone who pushes the boundaries of straight photography. But in his new show Full of Promise at the Maria Neil Art Project, he goes further than he’s ever gone.

While the works still incorporate photography, it’s the first series in which he has leaned so heavily on other media including painting, drawing, Sculpture and installation. He talks with CoolCleveland’s John Benson about the risks he’s taking as an artist. Fri 9/2-Sun 10/16.

Patrick Ciamacco founded Blank Canvas Theatre with the idea of doing a diverse schedule of plays that weren’t being done by every other theater in town – and in the process growing the Cleveland theater audience with fun and affordable shows.

Blank Canvas recently installed new seating in its space in 78th Street Studios and hopes to make other upgrades, Meanwhile it’s hosting a benefit to pay for its performance rights. The low-dough party includes food, drink, raffles and karaoke. Sat 9/3.
