Thrive

Thrive

Even as the leaves turn color and drop, those of us used to four glorious seasons understand that some things must die for the next generation to live. It’s part of the natural process, and instead of focusing on the dying, we’re focused on thriving.

And so are Jen Margolis and her crew at the brand-new social venture [thrive]; so are Bad Racket with their 4X4 release party; so are Near West Theatre with their intergenerational, multicultural, multiracial blockbuster “Children of Eden”; same with Oldschool Sinema’s Zombie Prom, Cranksgiving Cleveland’s scavenger hunt, and Cellar Door CLE’s semi-regular musician showcase.

As usual, we offer commentary to keep us thriving: this week it’s post-election analysis and opinion on the proposed skywalk. They’re making visual & musical harmonic hues at MOCA & CIM, they’re auctioning off Zamboni rides at United Way, they’re celebrating at 87.7, and they’re making Alterations at Survival Kit Gallery. Surviving? We’re thriving. –Thomas Mulready

Formed earlier this year, [thrive] has the unenviable task of trying to turn Northeast Ohio’s frown upside down…

Art of Story with Erik Bork
Screenwriting, Tom Hanks & Working Really Hard

Those on the peripheral of the entertainment industry often think that Hollywood is a mysterious place where beautiful faces simply show up and get on TV.

While that may happen once or twice in a million, the truth is, the people who do succeed in such a competitive, fickle and ever-changing environment are those who stay focused, do what they must and work, really, really hard.

This past Friday night, after all the political noise settled down, Tri-C students, professors and administrators settled in for an evening of truth, wisdom and professional sobriety with award-winning writer and producer Erik Bork…

Grow A Pair, Cleveland
A Skywalk? Really?

Cleveland needs to grow a pair.

Truth is, we have an amazing city. Our cultural assets are one-of-a-kind; we have top-notch educational institutions, and an aesthetic appeal most cities outside of the Rust Belt can’t offer.

But many Clevelanders and city leaders still suffer from an inferiority complex that has plagued our region ever since suburban flight began in the 1950s…

Hilton Smith, the newly elected president of the Cleveland Chapter of the NAACP, referenced President Obama’s victory while making his first comments as head of that venerable organization.

And indeed, he could have his hands as full as the president since Greater Cleveland has as many civil rights issues and social problems as any other locale in the nation… probably more than most…

Make no mistake, this was a seismic election and one that will be talked about for decades and decades.

No, it didn’t “change America” in the same manner that so many elections have claimed to do in the past. More significantly, it was the glorious manifestation of a Changed America from which there is no turning back…

ROLDO: Joe Cimperman & the Lies Some Pols Tell Hey, Roldo…Post-election, I’ll be interested in reading your take on the success of the Cleveland Schools levy vs. the failure of the countywide ports levy…
Read the comment from John J. Polk here

Roldo, you are absolutely right about Joe Cimperman. In my dealings with Cimperman I have found him to be a self-serving liar who can’t be trusted to do the right thing…
Read the comment from David Eden here

Roldo, what the heck is the matter with you? If WalMart can sell the groceries for $25.00 less than Giant Eagle, why not let the people spend less on groceries? What’s wrong with telling them they can do this?…
Read the comment from IndyCA35 here

I will never forget approaching Cimperman at at public meeting, involving a large project in which I represented a principle. I asked him about what I considered to be some very deceitful statements from developers. He quickly told me “it was all smoke and mirrors” turned his back and walked away…
