Surrender 11.26-12.03.14

Surrender

To surrender or not. That is the question. Because it seems that it’s time for a change.

Start by giving in to the coolness around you. Behind The Sign is as much a spiritual exercise as it is a video series highlighting small businesses. Forming Cleveland is a new study from CPAC that traces the role that our local visual arts scene is playing in our region’s revival. OneCommunity launches the country’s first 100 gigabit network for business. Surrender to the small press invasion at the 6th annual Genghis Con. Glow lights up the CBG. Talespinner mounts Clara & The Nutcracker. The Cleveland Polka Hall of Fame hands out awards. Pop Up: Art in Unexpected Places explores revitalizing Akron’s historic architecture. Mammoths & Mastodons are coming to CMNH. WinterFest heads to PlayhouseSquare.

Don’t surrender to big box laziness. The Cleveland Bazaar & Manly Mart are headed to the 5th Street Arcades. #GiveTheBasics on Giving Tuesday. Meet 10 local authors in one day at Mac’s Backs. For years, we’ve pointed our readers to local independent businesses during the holidays, but now we are upping the ante. Visit our ShopLOCAL listings on your mobile or laptop to find hundreds of cool alternatives to shopping malls & corporate chains. –Thomas Mulready

Tough, irreverent, and funny, comics are the cool kids of the art world. The ones everybody loves to hang out with. On Sun 11/30, at the Lake Erie Building you can do just that at the sixth annual Genghis Con.

Like the Great Khan born clutching a blood clot, the artists at this event grab life by the balls…

Steal a sneak peek inside the Cleveland Museum of Natural History’s massive exhibit: Mammoths and Mastodons: Titans of the Ice Age, direct from the Field Museum in Chicago.

With interactive, hands-on exhibits and huge recreations of beasts up to 42,000 years old, the exhibition features the recently discovered baby mammoth named Lyuba from Russia, and the CMNH’s own Hartley mastodon, along with rare objects from Lewis & Clark, huge tusks, videos and dioramas. http://www.CMNH.org.

Behind every sign is a story. That’s especially true in Cleveland, where the handmade signs of Earl Phillips, owner of U-Need-A-Sign Company, proliferate the inner city.

Cleveland SGS aims to spotlight small businesses like Phillips’ in their new Behind the Sign video installment.

“Our goal is to bring life to things that people view as being devoid of meaning,” says Cleveland SGS’ Dale Caruso. “Our efforts are a spiritual exercise; it keeps us sane and betters our chance of getting into paradise. People can support our efforts by engaging a stranger a day in a meaningful conversation…”

As part of their International Education Week, CMSD students from Lincoln-West High School and the Walton K-8 School cheered, jumped, sang and danced to more than a dozen on-stage international performances.

The students learned about the importance of understanding other cultures, and seemed well prepared to move on and graduate into more advanced levels of study. The performances ranged from Latin fusion music, to an African fashion show, to Nepali dancers and to a Vietnamese lion dance!

I agree in totality with your observations of how criminal behavior can be perpetuated from generation to generation. However, aren’t you perpetuating misogynous attitudes by your use of the term “b**ch,” when describing a female?…
