Smashing

In so many ways, this town is smashing.

We’re debating if it’s best to demolish our vacant buildings to free the property up for development, as Richey Piiparinen’s insightful research tracks. Women artists are smashing barriers during Women’s History Month with an exhibit and awards at Lakeland CC. Akron-Canton Airport has smashed their passenger record for 22 straight months. Kate Gilmore is literally smashing pots of paint at MOCA, and we’ve got her on video.

We’re smashing in other ways, too: Anastasia Pantsios tracks all the great music headed our way this week: Charlie Mosbrook, Rumpke Mountain Boys, and Bach’s coffeehouse in Chagrin Falls. Theatre Ninjas are smashing tradition with site-specific work, and Zivko Radenkov is smashing in his one-man show at Loop. –Thomas Mulready

In Saving Neighborhoods…
Demolition & Preservation Are Not Mutually Exclusive

I am a researcher on an ongoing study commissioned by the Thriving Communities Institute that has sparked a debate about what to do with the glut of vacant houses in Cuyahoga County, which number 26,000.

The debate is being played out curiously, with lines drawn between those who want to preserve vacant houses versus those who want to demolish vacant houses…

It’s an unbelievable run, especially considering the recent economy.

Akron-Canton Airport has experienced 22 consecutive months of record passenger levels.

Why are people flocking to CAK? It might be because they offer the lowest average fare of any airport in Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky and Pennsylvania. This keeps fares low throughout our region.

Last week in part one I wrote about Billy Tell building his new home on Chester Avenue at E. 86th Street, near what was to eventually become the main roadway entrance to Cleveland Clinic at E. 93rd.

Lots of folks ridiculed him at the time, and others still scoff at the notion of rebuilding the black middleclass in Hough. Chasing the chimera of racial integration, blacks with the wherewithal were (and are) supposed to decamp for more upscale enclaves…

Kate Gilmore has issues. In a good way.

Starting out as a sculptor and painter, she turned to using the strategies of performance and video. “The work I was making wasn’t dynamic enough… I was interested in the chaos of the studio, and getting the humor out, and being witty, but also being smart and funny…”

Offering a refreshing perspective on macho action painters such as Jackson Pollock, Gilmore videotapes herself in a dress and high heels smashing pots of latex paint in a constructed tableaux, displaying the results alongside the video. “There is a feminist conversation with the work.”

The Space Between Buildings: Who Has The Rights? Critics often portray skywalks as “glass gerbil tubes.” But, in the wind and snow, I would much rather be a warm gerbil than a freezing Guinea pig enduring some overreaching urban social engineering….

After spending significant time working in DownTown Des Moines, I have disagree with your assessment. Des Moines has a population significantly less than that of Cleveland, yet it has a very extensive skywalk system. I can personally attest to the benefit of that skywalk system, and the benefits a system like that can bring to a city….
