Maltz Museum Basks in the Golden Age of Comic Books

It’s a Bird, It’s a Plane… it’s Superman. And many other superheroes, too. The iconic Cleveland figure and a venerable “justice league” of other heroes and heroines have landed at the The Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage in Beachwood. Offering a spotlight on the original comic book heyday, the Maltz’s new exhibit Zap! Pow! Bam!: The Super Hero, The Golden Age of Comic Books 1938-1950 should thrill kids and their families alike. Though prominently featured, Superman is but one of the subjects on display in Zap! To wit, Superman was born here in Cleveland by Glenville High School students/buddies Jerry Siegel and Joe Schuster. The exhibition — which has toured a circuit of Jewish museums nationwide — showcases timeless characters like the Man of Steel, the “Dark Knight” called Batman, Captain America, Wonder Woman and more. The exhibit also offers a unique perspective on the way pop culture portrays issues and “how identity and culture can shape popular opinion.” [pictured: Superman #14. Cover art by Fred Ray. c) 1941 DC Comics. Superman TM and c) DC Comics. All rights reserved. Used with Permission. From the collection of Jerry Robinson.] Never-before-displayed comic book art, memorabilia, serials, multimedia and a child-sized Batmobile ride and interactive Superman phone booth are just the beginning. Up, up and away… but only for a limited time. Learn more about this high-flying exhibition by visiting http://www.maltzjewishmuseum.org.

Phil Donahue talks about his Body of War
Cleveland’s “Favorite Son” on Iraq, Mainstream Media and more

The phone rings and for the first time since I interviewed James Earl Jones many years ago, the voice on the other end commands attention like thunder. It seems almost surreal. “Peter? Phil Donahue calling.” That voice, instantly recognizable. Insightful and incisive, I expect ten minutes with one of Cleveland’s “favorite sons”; he graciously gives me an hour. He’s got a lot to say this morning, never at a loss for words.

One would be hard pressed to find a greater (or more recognizable) broadcast icon than the St. Edwards High School grad. Donahue launched his career right here in Ohio — establishing the model for tabloid talk shows in a five-decade career that ended with a short-lived, eponymous MSNBC news program. And while he’s in town this weekend for a screening of his award-winning documentary film Body of War and accepting an award from Ohio Citizen Action, thoughts on the MSM (“mainstream media” for you non-bloggers) are never far from his mind…

Rockometer lands on Rock and Roll Boulevard Now that demolition of the old US Coast Guard station across from the Rock Hall on E. 9th Street has begun, we find ourselves at a crossroads. Will the Federal government give National Concession founder and redoubtable impresario Christopher Axelrod permission to build “the most elaborate” state-of-the-art, 2000-seat party center East of Las Vegas? We don’t see why they wouldn’t. As proposed, the Rockometer would sport 3 jumbo screens and a giant jukebox theme measuring the spirit level of Cleveland on the facade, while inside the flexible venue could host everything from Cleveland’s every-third-year Rock Hall induction ceremonies and similar corporate celebrations to the Grammy Awards, featuring a hydraulic stage, a media center/broadcast facility, water and vapor effects, an underground tunnel to the Museum, and no doubt, lot of attitude. Check the video, and embrace the vision: http://www.TheRockometer.com

10,000 Visions Catches Them Like Fireflies

When I saw the cards on tables along E. 6th Street during the Warehouse District’s block party a few weeks ago, I was intrigued. “Cleveland… What’s Your Vision?” the cards asked. Smiling faces of people just like us paired with quotes of visions shared. Andrielle Eaton of Cleveland wants “a vibrant, alive city — a city that people are excited to live in.”

What would you say? What vision do you have for Cleveland? How would you like Cleveland to look? What would get us excited about where we live? What makes other people excited? How do we get Cleveland ignited with possibility? Together. And the more we work together, the more we can make a difference…

This week’s most active post on BrewedFreshDaily.com

“John McCain’s choice” writes Roldo Bartimole, “of Alaska’s 20-month governor Sarah Palin as his vice presidential candidate is right out of the Machiavellian Karl Rove’s playbook, meant to distract. The unusual choice is meant to play “head games” with the opposition and the gullible news media. It’s intended to divert. It is meant to confuse. Nothing more…”

Or perhaps it’s a brilliant move, selecting both a woman and someone with actual executive experience, to highlight the lackluster choice of Washington insider, blowhard, and proven liar Joseph Biden as a limp noodle Democrat Vice Presidential nominee, and the very thin resume of rhetorician Barack Obama. comment by J Murray

I covered Dennis Kucinich from the time he was a copy boy at the Wall Street Journal, where I was in 1967, through his mayoral period and have watched him since, a more than 40 year period. What strikes is that Sarah Palin has a very similar confrontational approach as Kucinich, though politically at another pole. comment by Roldo Bartimole

Jonathan, you are fated to be forever outraged by a simple fact of life that’s no less likely to change than the law of gravity: any normal, healthy, reasonably well-running (and yes, moral) society is going to impose some moral values on its economy, which is, after all, society’s vehicle for producing and distributing its collective wealth. You don’t have to like that, but I suggest you get used to it as a fact of life, because it will never change. comment by John Ettorre

We’ve strayed from the thread of the post again. As much as I’m tempted to point out that J. retreats to the “class warfare” canard whenever he runs out of logic (it’s not class warfare to discuss economic disparities any more that it was class warfare for my grandfather to fight for livable working conditions in the mines), and even more eager to point out that J. has now completely adopted my point the economics is fundamentally amoral and that societies always make moral decisions in confronting the effects of their economic systems, like deciding it’s immoral to fuel an economy on child labor or (as at least one party is reminding us) soil the air and water our children will need to survive… comment by Tom Zych

Ok I’ll bite. He DID present a distraction. One that speaks well before a crowd and allows the topic to be ‘omg he picked a woman’ instead of the definite differences in the candidates approaches and opinion on issues. Roldo is right, no matter who you are voting for. comment by Carole Cohen

Lynne Taylor-Corbett Marquees on GroundWorks’ Tenth

GroundWorks Dancetheater’s upcoming concert at the Akron Icehouse marks the company’s 10th anniversary season and its 9th consecutive September in the Icehouse, but it also marks a quantum leap forward for the company in its latest guest choreographer, Lynne Taylor-Corbett. To understand Taylor-Corbett’s importance to the national dance scene, think of Twyla Tharp, roughly her contemporary. Like Tharp, Taylor-Corbett has choreographed for major ballet companies, Broadway, and Hollywood. Unlike Tharp, Taylor-Corbett never bought into post modern dance and Judson Church; instead, she got her downtown sensibility from Anna Sokolow and disciples of The Living Theater, actors with avant garde, activist outlooks. That’s our explanation of why Tharp is more of a groundbreaker (if sometimes obscure in her meanings and detached from emotion) while Taylor-Corbett is more accessible, seldom far from theatrical verities like emotion, character, and narrative…

Work in Progress
Deborah Van Kleef
TSM Records

It’s a soundtrack for the hard-workin’ types sprinkled along Mermaid Avenue. Local troubadour folkie Deborah Van Kleef’s new CD Work in Progress is everything that folk music lovers and understudies of Woody Guthrie, Ramblin’ Jack Elliott, Pete Seeger and Malvina Reynolds love: rootsy, backwoods “stories of ordinary people” and their trials and tribulations. This 15-track collection blends music history and wit with a blend of the oldest of old-school styles — jug band, country blues contemporary folk and swing. These are the kind of songs that speak to the hard-working, blue collar ethos of this region, as she champions workers, snipes at their bosses and finds moments of genuine, heartfelt flavor in the process. Talk about an appropriately-titled effort. Marquee performers like Bruce Springsteen and Billy Bragg & Wilco have paid homage to this stripped back style recently, but to hear the majesty and power Van Kleef offers in this lo-fi take on traditional music is to hear it in a pure and thrilling way. Listen to Van Kleef’s title track “Work in Progress” here and purchase her disc at CD Baby.

Power to the People
Plus: It’s gut-check time for Obama

A book recently published by the Brookings Institution Press (2008), Democracy in the States – Experiments in Election Reform, is a broad look at how we vote in America… and the changes we could make to expand the franchise. This in-depth work examines virtually every aspect of the electoral process and gives voice to the complaints that keep many people away from the polls. (It should be duly noted that my step-daughter, Bridgett King, a political science doctoral candidate at Kent State University, is one of the contributors to this impressive work.)

A recent unfortunate occurrence in the 11th Congressional District (the untimely passing of Stephanie Tubbs Jones) is bringing the way we vote into sharp focus. Although we are now armed with impressive technology, we still vote via antiquated methods. Many other countries around the world are far ahead of us in terms of democratic processes when it comes to voting. We now have the capacity for direct democracy, but we allow our political leaders to continue to use largely unfair processes. A good place to start educating oneself is…

PD Biased Choice of Sutherland Over Lawson Jones
Plus: A Meaningless “Public Meeting”

Ask yourself, if Republican Debbie Sutherland were running against Tim Hagan would The Plain Dealer be endorsing her? I doubt it. Tim Hagan does the bidding of every Establishment desire. He’s the leader of taxing Cuyahoga County residents for every millionaire’s desire for government subsidy of their businesses.

And he’s the darling of The Plain Dealer editorial bosses, particularly its director Brent Larkin. Larkin protects Hagan, a hypocritical and arrogant politician. But a politician that favors big business, as does the PD
