Get this: If all 59 cities and townships in Cuyahoga combined, Cleveland would be the 8th largest city in the U.S., ahead of San Diego, Dallas and San Francisco. We’d reduce taxes, lower costs and offer a single entry point for citizens and businesses ready to grow here in NEO. This week, Jeff Biasella continues his popular series with little tough love for our city, which used to be the sixth largest, and Mansfield discusses desperately needed County reform. Plus, read about Room Service Cleveland and their Made in the 216 multi-arts expo. CD reviews of Miss Melvis and the new Coffinberry, and Roldo rounds things out with a little deja vu. Which is what we’re going to get, if we don’t figure out a way to collaborate and work together. Eighth City, anyone? –Thomas Mulready

Danielle DeBoe’s Got it Made… in the 216
Room Service Cleveland Showcases Artsy Ingenuity

“We’re just as creative as the other, larger markets,” says Room Service Cleveland’s Danielle DeBoe. “And a lot of times, even more so. Sometimes, I feel like I’m on a mission to make sure everyone here knows and remembers that.”

The sharp, sure-footed and bubbly owner-operator of the Cleveland-centric lifestyle shop/boutique in the Detroit-Shoreway Neighborhood has a point: it can be hard to get through to some Clevelanders that we shouldn’t pine away for what’s happening in the larger markets throughout the country.

DeBoe’s Room Service Cleveland opened on Black Friday 2007 (that’s the day after Thanksgiving, for you non-participants) with a novel, simple idea: “harness Cleveland’s design culture and channel it.” To wit, her art-style, design and fashion expo Made in the 216 that hits this weekend speaks volumes about the talent and creativity found right here on Lake Erie, and all without having to beat anyone over the head with the idea…

Deanna Dozier didn’t think she’d be able to afford her new home one block from where she works at the Cleveland Clinic. She looked for almost four years for a two-family house for her daughter, her mom and her sister, who are living with her. She finally located this large house with four bedrooms, full finished attic, full basement, and five bathrooms, with just a 5 minute walk to work.

Listen to Deanna as she explains how she took advantage of the Greater Circle Living program, which offers grants up to $15,000 through the Fairfax Neighborhood Development Corp, which Deanna used for her down payment and for initial repairs to her new house. It’s available to people working in non-profits around University Circle to buy a home. FairfaxRenaissance.org

A Post-Grad Appreciates the Sixth City Known as Cleveland
Part Two of a Series

OK, this might come off as a little harsh — maybe even as tough love. But I’m only saying this because I love Cleveland and I want to see the city prosper. The old adage, “This is going to hurt me just as much as it hurts you,” is definitely at play here… Ya know those three Cleveland attraction items from last week that I wrote? They about mean absolutely nothing if I don’t address this issue first… those “Hastily Made Cleveland Tourism” videos you’ve seen/heard about on YouTube are more fact than fiction…

Independents Unite!
(If you don’t, you’ll continue to get the kind of government you’re constantly complaining about)

As the talk of county reform continues to heat up, driven by the scandal that won’t seem to go away or come to an end, I’m put in mind of a T-shirt I saw a few years ago that read: “I’ve given up on reality, and am now trying to find a nice fantasy to believe in.” And that’s exactly what we’d be doing if we think that the county reform plan that has been put forth will solve all of our problems (or hardly any of them, for that matter). The truth is, it might just make the situation worse

Making a Difference… One Step at a Time
Summer Walking Events Benefit Local Worthy Causes, Personal Health

One of my fondest Junior High School memories was a 20-mile walk along the streets of Akron to support a good cause. It was challenging. It was interesting. We pounded the pavement through previously-unexplored urban areas and commercial districts and past well-manicured lawns… I felt pride and a sense of accomplishment, even while my feet developed blisters, because I had sponsors behind me and pledged money in an envelope. It was also a lot of fun — we were all in it together and we made it a good time. So every time I see flyers for 5K Runs and Family Walks spread out on the desk at my local FitWorks, I want to do my part…

Miss Melvis and the Buford Pusser Experience

Garage rock has long been been a Cleveland staple. It started (arguably) with the Choir in the mid-1960s; Coffinberry and Miss Melvis and the Buford Pusser Experience carry the aesthetic forward in very different ways… the former quartet charts its own propulsive path, with surprising harmonic convergence; the latter’s “sixty-weight sludge rock” and lo-fi pop missives swoon with the spirit of Detroit Cobras and Queens of the Stone Age…

Has Anything Really Changed Since 1988?

I’ve been rummaging around in old stuff trying to put some old writings in some order. I came across a column from June 1988 that I’ll repeat below. I think it stands up 21 years later and provides some background or, if you will, history. It was entitled “When Duties Become Incentives” and appeared in the Cleveland Edition. Boy, do I miss the Edition. Here it is:

I have a friend who from time to time chastises me about the nature of my negative attitudes toward the Cleveland Establishment and its role in Cleveland affairs… The fact is, however, the Establishment knows only too well about the city’s condition in leadership and direction…
