Cleveland Online Station oWow Radio To Launch Happy Hour Free Concert Series at the Music Box

Wed 6/7 @ 6PM

Cleveland’s older cohort of rock ’n’ rollers fondly recall WMMS-FM’s Coffeebreak Concerts, which ran regularly from the mid 70s through 1984 at the long-gone Cleveland Agora location at East 24th and Payne. The weekly midday Wednesday concerts featured an array of national and local talent including Bryan Adams, Lou Reed, John Mellencamp, Quiet Riot, Cyndi Lauper, Donnie Iris, Michael Stanley and Artful Dodger. And they were free.

Now locally based online radio station oWow, programmed by John Gorman, the brains behind WMMS in that golden era, is launching a set of weekly summer concerts in the mold of the old Coffeebreaks. The Happy Hour concerts will take place every Wednesday at the Music Box Supper Club in the Flats. As with the Coffeebreaks, they’ll be broadcast live in a commercial-free format.

The plan is to once again mix national local performers, but the first month’s lineup focuses on some of the area’s most talented artists. Kicking it off on Wed 6/7 is bluesy rocker, vocalist/guitarist/songwriter Kristine Jackson. She’ll be followed on Wed 6/14 by popular area reggae veteran Carlos Jones, on Wed 6/21 by young singer/songwriter Nate Jones, and on Wed/ 6/28 by rootsy rocker Brent Kirby, who plays in several area bands as well as solo and hosts curated songwriter showcases called 10 x 3.

The club will open for mingling and drinking at 5pm, with music starting at 6.
