The Akron Symphony Plays Stravinsky’s ‘Firebird’ Ballet at EJ Thomas Hall

AkronSymFirebird

Fri 2/10 @ 8PM

Michael Fokine’s ballet The Firebird for the Ballet Russes was a hit when it debuted in 1910 and has been a standard part of the repertoire for more than a century. Its Russian folklore-based story about a magical bird was set to music by Igor Stravinsky, and that too has become a repertoire staple for orchestras.

The Akron Symphony will take on that enduring music for its next concert, with music director Christopher Wilkins conducting an orchestra of 107 musicians in performing the complete ballet. The evening will also include two shorter pieces to warm up, Carl Maria von Weber’s Der Freischütz Overture and Maurice Ravel’s Daphnis and Chloe Suite No. 2.

There will also be a presentation by Akron’s Alchemy, an organization that mentors African-American youth using myths and African drumming. They’re currently studying The Firebird, and will share their own take on it as part of the program. Wilkins will also do a Preview From the Podium at 7pm.

Tickets are $20-$55.
