Heavy Metal Holiday Food Drive at the Beachland Is Bigger Than Ever

Night Demon

Fri 12/1 @ 7PM

Sat 12/2 @ 5PM

Just when you think the annual Cleveland Metal Holiday Food Drive at the Beachland can’t get bigger and better, it does.

Taking place Sat 12/2, this is its 9th year and it’s also celebrating the 35th year of the WJCU Metal on Metal show hosted by Cleveland metal maven Bill Peters who organizes this annual event. The doors open at 4pm and the action starts at 5pm when ’70s Cleveland rock band Granicus, whose short lifespan turned them into a cult band, take the stage in the Ballroom for a reunion set.

The music will go back and forth between the Ballroom and the Tavern, with sets back to back but not overlapping so fans can catch all the music with no downtime. Major highlights this year include a set by the original lineup of Cleveland’s legendary ’80s band Breaker (9pm) following a set by another Cleveland band who rocked that era and shared stages with Breaker, Shok Paris (7:30).

Olathia, fronted by metal queen Chris Emig, closes the Tavern stage from 9:50-10:25, giving fans just enough time to rush back to the Ballroom for the 10:30 set by Los Angeles’ Night Demon who will be doing a 90-minute set being recorded for live-in-Cleveland album. Once they’re done, the Red Hot Heathens burlesque group puts the capper on the night. Other bands playing include Resistance, Lady Beast, Gluttons and RadiatriX.

Hosting the evening are Emig and Germany’s biggest fan of Cleveland metal, Iron Ingo Stührenberg. Comedians Cyndi Rice, Brad Bishop and John Hensler and Playboy model Daniella Dior will also be participating in the fun.

Admission is free; doors open at 4. Just bring food and cash donations for the Greater Cleveland Food Bank and Friends of the Cleveland Kennel. To raise even more money, donations are pouring in for the silent auction and raffle: rare records and other collectibles, unique T-shirts, pet-related items (including a donation of more than $350 in Purina products donated by Peters’ mother), tickets to upcoming concerts and photos, among them a set of shots of each of the bands who appeared on the legendary December 2, 1984 Variety Theatre concert when Motorhead caused the plaster on the ceiling to crumble with their volume, taken by Anastasia Pantsios.

If seven hours of music isn’t enough for you, there’s a pre-party on Friday evening at the Maple Grove, featuring Iron Maiden tribute, Edward Be Thy Name and hosted once again by Iron Ingo who is already cutting a swath through his adopted hometown. The Breaker guys, as well as some of the other musicians playing on Saturday, will be on hand to greet fans.
