One World

My good friend and sometime partner James Levin is at it again. His legacy of starting arts organizations that stimulate the mind along with our local economy is mind-boggling: he launched Cleveland Public Theatre and the Gordon Square Arts District, co-founded Ingenuity with myself, created the Wooster Jam, and now has founded the One World Festival, not only destined to be the area’s latest major annual event, but also heralds a new era in our region’s cultural collaborative future. Catch our video before you head down to the Cultural Gardens, and we’ll be there giving away all our Cool Cleveland t-shirts.

We also preview the now 10-year-old Ingenuity, the 22nd anniversary of the Grog Shop, Sustainable Cleveland 2019’s mid-goal conference, and the Hildebrandt Provisions Company, where food artists, fashion designers, rising comics and sculptors who play with razor blades all cozy up & collaborate. We sneak a peek inside the massive Content Marketing World conference with founder and Clevelander Joe Pulizzi. We bid a sad farewell to Visible Voice Books, and Alex bids a not-so-sad -albeit hilarious- farewell to Austin as she returns to the coolest town in the universe. It’s just one world, Cleveland. –Thomas Mulready

Just weeks after being named to the Inc. 500 list of the fastest growing companies for the third year in a row, we grabbed Content Marketing Institute founder Joe Pulizzi on the floor of the new Cleveland Convention Center as he marshaled over 2500 attendees and hundreds of brand-name companies to their Content Marketing World mega-conference on the future of marketing.

What is content marketing, and why is it taking over the world of business? Who are the big names, locally and internationally that are offering sessions this week? And just where did Joe take the 1500 early arrivals on their first night in the fabulous Shan-gri-la that is our fair city? Watch the video and find out. And if you see Joe this week, wear orange.

Some are calling Cravings Thai the best Thai restaurant in Cleveland. Maybe because of their authentic Thai chef Tibby Pansing, who prepared a few unique dishes for our Cool Cleveland interview.

Hear Paul Sykes and Chef Tibby talk about their latest concept as they transform the original Cravings coffeehouse in Rocky River into a first-class Thai restaurant at 4PM everyday. And yes, our feast after the video was delicious! CravingsThai.com

CMSD CEO Eric Gordon Testifies
In Support of the Common Core

There’s legislation in the works that would set back CMSD’s efforts to prepare students for success in the 21st Century, said the organization’s CEO Eric Gordon, who testified earlier this month in Columbus — and that legislation is House Bill 597. The bill would wipe out four years of preparation, realignment of the curriculum and investment in technology needed for tests, Gordon told the House Rules Committee.

Instead of rote memorization, the Common Core would promote critical thinking and other advanced skills. Gordon said that would end “teaching to the test,” a criticism of the old assessments, and give teachers more freedom, not less.

Do You Know Who I Am?
My One Month in Austin

In early 2013, after two years of research, I made the big decision to move down to Austin, Texas.

Tired of Midwest winters and Ohio taxes and looking to shake things up, by the end of last year I sold my furniture, ended my apartment and car leases, packed personal items in storage and saw my future in the Lone Star State…

When I heard that Visible Voice Books, a new bookstore, had opened on St. Valentine’s Day on Kenilworth in Tremont back in 2007, I made a beeline over to check it out.

This was during the height of the closing frenzy of mega-bookstores around the country so the opening of a small outlet embedded in a community was of great interest to me…

Without knowing much of anything about life in Costa Rica, we at least could see that the small town 20 kilometers west of capital San José is constructed in a walkable grid…
