Amethyst Quartet Plays a Spanish-Themed Program at Waterloo Arts

Sun 5/14 @ 4PM

Violinist Mary Beth Ions is one of those busy freelance musicians who’s built a professional career in Cleveland playing here, there and everywhere. The Amethyst String Quartet is a project she leads, featuring Carol Ruzicka on second violin; Alexandra Vago on viola and Linda Atherton on cello.

They’ll be performing a family-friendly Mother’s Day concert at Waterloo Arts in the Waterloo Arts District to conclude the spring 2017 season of its Music for Miles concert series. They’ll be giving their program a distinctively Spanish tone, with selections from Georges Bizet’s Carmen and Leonard Bernstein’s West Side Story, along with pop tunes such as “Guantanamera,” “Eres Tu,” “The Bullfighter’s Prayer,” “Besame Mucho,” and “Gracias a la Vida” and some tango music as well.

It’s somewhat in keeping with the theme of the current show at the gallery, a set of handmade artist books made from recycled materials by Cuban small press Ediciones Vigia.

The concerts are informal — listeners are free to come and go, and browse the art. There’s an opportunity to mingle with the musicians. And you can purchase food and drink at the adjoining Callaloo Café, with its Caribbean-style cuisine and enjoy it while you listen. The concert is free.
