Celebrating
Fortunately, the Cinematheque is screening a new series of films by women, The Female Gaze, while Maria Neil honors the passing of Anthony Bartholomew, a vital presence in the local art scene. And we celebrate the life and music of arguably the most essential artist of our time when An Evening With(out) David Bowie returns in expanded form to BOP STOP on Fri 1/13 & Sat 1/14. Get a preview and a whole lot more at Bowieoke this Sat 1/7 at Musica.
The flip side of celebrating is being vigilant, and artists spoke out last week calling for more transparency from Cuyahoga Arts & Culture after they proposed changing the Creative Workforce Fellowships to be geared away from art and towards social change. CoolCeveland was in attendance and our report about the ongoing discussion is below. Follow along and celebrate the arts. –Thomas Mulready

CoolCleveland is dedicated to George Nemeth
Celebrating his birth and death dates, this acclaimed presentation on David Bowie’s life and music, featuring rare video, needle drops, archival photos and insider secrets by CoolCleveland’s Thomas Mulready on Fri 1/13 and Sat 1/14 at the BOP STOP, now in two sessions, presented back-to-back each evening. Tickets are selling briskly. Join us for An Evening With(out) David Bowie.
Part 1 begins with his half-dozen failed attempts at stardom in the 1960’s to worldwide “Fame” with Young Americans, during which Bowie bottoms out, as the excesses of mid-1970’s stardom threaten to engulf him. Part 2 covers his mid-to-late period, from “The Berlin Trilogy” through Let’s Dance to his mysteriously choreographed death and his final recordings. Tickets are now on sale. Last year’s shows sold out four times.
At a time that has suddenly become very discouraging for women, the Cleveland Institute of Art Cinematheque’s series The Female Gaze: Landmark Films by Women is a welcome arrival. It points out how many films women have made, despite the overwhelming majority of directors being male.
Cinematheque director John Ewing shares with our reporter John Benson his excitement about the films in this series, which runs from Sat 1/14-Sat 2/25. But as a teaser, Andrea Arnold’s American Honey, which Ewing calls one of 2016’s best films, screens Sat 1/7.

Artist Anthony Bartholomew, who passed away five years ago, was an active presence in the local art scene: a printmaking instructor at Kent State, an artist in residence at Zygote Press, and a commercial screenprinter at Jakprints.
Now Maria Neil Art Project is mounting a retrospective of his work called Above the Surface, in cooperation with his parents, that also shows for the first time what he was working on when he died. John Benson talks to Maria Neil co-owner Adam Tully to learn how the show came together. Fri 1/6.

Angered by recent changes to individual artist grants funded by the county Arts and Culture levy renewed last year – in large art because artists campaigned for it – members of the arts community met at the Happy Dog/Euclid Tavern Wed 12/28 to air their concerns and chart a path forward.
The theme echoed by both the event’s panelists and audience members was the discouraging lack of transparency from the administering organization Cuyahoga Arts and Culture. Plans are afoot to organize and make sure that future CAC board meetings are well attended by community members.

FILM REVIEW: Fences by Mansfield Frazier
Fences has Oscar written all over it, but knowing the racial politics of Hollywood (which is supposed to be this liberal bastion), it just might be too soon for another black film to win any awards, no matter how well-deserved. ‘Tis a pity that some things have not changed all that much…
