Plus, we celebrate a fabulous food show, art in the Metroparks, new music and community engagement. Cool Cleveland gets you playing on all tracks at once- just start clicking below. –Thomas Mulready

Legally Blonde
Natalie Joy Johnson
Playhouse Square

Legally Blonde started life as the hit movie with Reese Witherspoon, and has made the successful transition to a fabulous Broadway musical that’s been nominated for 7 Tony Awards. Cool Cleveland’s Thomas Mulready had the chance to meet up with Natalie Joy Johnson, who plays the role of Paulette in the touring production (after playing the lesbian role of Enid on Broadway). “Who doesn’t love the movie, and who doesn’t love those dogs?” she exclaims, except that Natalie is allergic, and has to handle the bulldog in the show. She also talks about the travails of traveling, especially for someone like Natalie who takes two hours to pack. Legally Blonde: The Musical runs through Sun 11/23 and Broadway Buzz pre-show presentations take place 30 minutes before each show, and a post-show talk back with the actors is held on Thursdays. The VIP “Elle’s Lounge” features the “pink carpet treatment” with hors d’oeuvres, drinks and goodies. Check the site for details and tix. www.PlayhouseSquare.org

Lawrence Carter & Kevin Schmotzer
City Architecture

Lawrence Carter & Kevin Schmotzer decided to move from their home on West 110th Street in Cleveland to The Avenue District because they want to be part of an urban environment where they can walk to everything. Kevin works at City Hall and would like to walk to and from work every day rather than take his car or public transportation. As part of his job in Economic Development, he talks to people about the benefits of living downtown. Listen as Kevin discusses why he wants to “walk the walk” and be part of it all. Lawrence, who is part-owner of a pet boutique, is also looking forward to becoming part of a walkable neighborhood that’s not only pet-friendly but also offers amenities such as tailors, dentists, doctors, pharmacies and grocery stores. No more driving to get a gallon of milk – just turn the corner, and there you are.

Because they’ll be so close to the theater, warehouse district and sporting events, Kevin and Lawrence anticipate that their new home at The Avenue District will become the new hub for all their friends. http://www.TheAvenueDistrict.com

Kerry Orywal
Technical Writer
Cleveland Plus

Kerry Orywal was able to keep her job and work from the home when her family made the move from the Dallas/Ft. Worth area to the Cleveland Plus region. But when you speak with her for a while, you realize that she’s all about her kids, aged 4 & 7. They had never seen snow in Texas, but the kids just loved skiing and sledding during the winter here. They didn’t know much about the Cleveland area or Ohio, but now they don’t plan on moving for a long time to come. Why? The people here are so much more friendly.

And Kerry has a theory for that as well: in Texas, it’s so hot about 1/3 of the year, that people just come home from work and stay inside, unlike this region where people are out and about year round. They love their little village of Chagrin Falls and the kids are busy with swimming, dancing… and boxing. Always a surprise in Cleveland Plus. http://www.ClevelandPlusLiving.com

Urban Italian
Simple Recipes and True Stories from a Life in Food
Andrew Carmellini with Gwen Hyman
Bloomsbury USA

Reviewing a cookbook is new territory for Cool Cleveland but rest assured, once you delve into the luxurious recipes and bold sincerity of Shaker Heights expat Andrew Carmellini’s Urban Italian, you’ll understand our reasoning. Hard-to-please gastronomists like Anthony Bourdain and Cleveland’s own Michael Ruhlman are raving about this “creative yet accessible” book “written with a candor and bravado.” Who could argue? Food for the soul is what gets many Clevelanders through those tough winter months; to wit, Carmellini’s approach to Italian is Cleveland-hearty — robust and rustic, yet undeniably urbane

Nancy Pearl on Jane & Michael Stern
Writers Center Stage Series
Cuyahoga County Public Library

Nancy Pearl, the rock star of librarians, featured on NPR and in media around the world, is back. She considers herself a “promiscuous reader” and feels beyond mere love for books, so she called her first book, Book Lust. And now she is helping the Cuyahoga County Public Library celebrate “Reconnect With Reading.”

Nancy preps us for the upcoming visit by Jane and Michael Stern, authors of the seminal, Road Food, in which they traveled around the country finding really good, home-cooked American food. Tapping into the American road mythology in which we travel to understand ourselves, as well as the tradition of food writing, going back to Julia Child’s early books, the Sterns have won the James Beard award three time for their column in Gourmet. Jane & Michael Stern take the stage at the Ohio Theatre on Tue 12/2 as part of CCPL’s Writers Center Stage series. Celebrate the recent passage of the County library’s levy as well as their recent award as the 2nd best library system in the country. www.WritersCenterStage.org

Please — Don’t Make Him Look Bad
Plus: Mayor Jackson and Political Courage

Not to take anything away from the masterful campaign President-elect Barack Obama’s team ran, but it has to be acknowledged that Bush and his cohorts made a Democratic victory so very easy by pushing the country to the brink of ruination — financially and in regards to our reputation worldwide. As president, Obama and his cabinet will have their hands full as they attempt to right the Ship of State. Issues like the economy, the war, foreclosures, and healthcare will dominate all of the new administration’s time and energy.

However, this leaves plenty for the rest of us to do.

Voting for Obama was the easy part; helping him resolve some of the long-standing and persistent social problems of the nation will prove a bit harder — he’ll desperately need our help. In his election-night speech, the president-elect pointedly mentioned personal responsibility. That’s where you and I come in… Read more from Mansfield B. Frazier here

This week’s most active post on BrewedFreshDaily.com

“There’s been debate on BFD,” writes Rick Pollack, “about the cause of the financial crisis. One narrative stated that congressional pressure (by democrats) forced the GSEs to purchase subprime loans and that the government created this mess. While it is very true that Fannie and that the government bear considerable responsibility, the blanket assertion that democrats and Fannie are to blame misses the greater context. Additionally, the variations on this theme blaming community organizations, the Community Reinvestment Act, and other initiatives related to affordable housing are heavy on politics and light on fact. With the election just a few days a way these beliefs need to be openly challenged…”

Rick, exactly right. That’s why the FMs shouldn’t have existed, but should certainly now be shot. Their special status as government-sponsored entities created the assumption that they would be bailed out by taxpayers if they had difficulties. This enabled them to borrow at lower rates than their competitors, which enabled them to then offer better terms for the more-profitable subprime loans… comment by J Murray

The culture of credit purchasing, buying things you can’t afford and having to have it all is to blame pure and simple. This causes predator lenders, consumers, all of us to do things that don’t help our economy. The credit crisis is just as important in all this as the mortgage lending issue and to me both are part of the bad foundation of culture. It has to be a change from the bottom up, in individual thinking. A paradigm shift that will get all of us back on track… comment by Carole Cohen

Carole – I completely agree with you on the credit front. I also agree with you about Fannie/Freddie being useful. The problem is that since at least 1998 Fannie has been dominated by the profit side of the equation. For all of the bluster about affordable housing, Fannie is graded based on dwellings and not houses. So, if their percentage of mortgages don’t meet the affordable housing requirements, Fannie funds rental units — hundreds of thousands of rental units. The affordable ‘housing’ aspect of their housing responsibility is unenforceable. comment by Rick Pollack

Rick, the housing crisis was fed by a credit bubble. The government, specifically the Federal Reserve, is the only entity that can cause a credit bubble, therefore the government did, indeed, cause the problem:) comment by J Murray

Once again, J., you prove yourself the King of Ideologically-Driven Oversimplification. comment by Tom Zych

The Cleveland Metroparks features two no-cost, worthwhile art exhibits this month which are first; the colored-pencil drawings of a new book entitled Alphabetic Butterflies in Color, The Art of Lawrence (Larry) Hohman at Rocky River Nature Center and second; a series of black and white photographs by Steve Cagan entitled Industrial Landscapes at CanalWay Center. Industrial Landscapes digs much deeper than its name implies. Not only are the places of industry featured — steel mills, slaughterhouses, shipping on the river — but the faces as well; the stoic hardworking people that make the stuff Cleveland is known for…

Les Paul: American Music Masters at the Rock Hall

The American Music Masters series, produced by Rock and Roll of Fame + Museum and The Baker-Nord Center for the Humanities at Case Western Reserve University, is in its 13th year and I’ve attended every one. It’s become one of my favorite weeks of the year. This year’s AMM program has already started, actually, but you can still catch seven events on the remaining four of its six days [Listen to the Cool Cleveland podcast here].

This year’s subject is Les Paul. If you’re a rock, country, jazz or R&B musician, you know his name. If you’re not, you still may be familiar with it. If you’re a musician, you know, at least, that his name is on one of the most popular guitars made, the Gibson Les Paul. His name has been synonymous with that model since 1952… Read more from David Budin here

Food Town Cleveland
Gearing up for the Ultimate Festival

It’s been said that Cleveland has more restaurants per capita, and more GOOD restaurants per capita, than most cities. Our summer festivals are popular enough that we can have two rib burn-offs in one weekend. We can get pretty much any ethnic food at some point during the summer at our many cultural festivals. Even our arts festivals feature food. So it’s no wonder that the Fabulous Food Show is in Cleveland for the third year in a row. We need a place as big as the I-X Center to satisfy our food cravings, just as the summer festivals have disappeared…

These Magnificent Miles
Red Wanting Blue
RWBE, LLC

This is an Ohio band that gets around. Red Wanting Blue is not from Cleveland (they’re from Athens) but they might as well be for as often as they visit. Their eighth release These Magnificent Miles finds a decade-old band on the precipice of bigger things. They have survived without label support and on the strength of great pop songwriting and word-of-mouth reputation for great live gigs — both of which are evident on the disc’s dozen upbeat, autobiographical songs. Produced by Jamie Candiloro (R.E.M., Ryan Adams, Willie Nelson), the disc draws the listener in with mellow jangle, summery beats and vocalist Scott Terry’s Jack Johnson-like wordplay and low-register, Vedderesque intonements…

Cleveland Orchestra @ Severance Hall 11/6 Franz Welser-Most returned home this week for one series of concerts before heading back to Europe for the rest of the year. He’ll be back in January, however. For this concert he spans two centuries of music with a spiritual connection: The Sept haïkaï of Olivier Messiaen from 1962 and the “Great” C Minor Mass, K 427 by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, written in 1782-83. Two such opposite works can hardly be imagined, however, both were well-done in convincing performances…

Madama Butterfly @ Opera Western Reserve 11/7 The productions of Opera Western Reserve, which take place in Youngstown’s ornate Stambaugh Auditorium tend to be of a hybrid nature — an interesting mix of established professionals in the positions that really demand such experience, while yet offering stepping stones to the newcomers in our midst who desperately need such exposure to begin their careers…
