Movements

Movements

We’re rolling them out pretty regularly these days: food, arts, music, makers, social challenges, biking, mobile engagement, even belly dancing.

Now we might be on the front end of a couple more movements: homeschooling, “Meatless Mondays,” social media. Alex Sheen hopes to start a new social movement with Because I Said I Would. CLE-based Content Marketing World is the largest event of its kind — and it’s something we’ve practiced at CC since day one.

Sometimes you have to move a bit to create a movement. Mary Bridget Davies grabbed a Tony nomination in NYC and is back in town at Mike’s Barn, wherever that is. Signals Midwest hits Now That’s Class, then strikes out for Europe. Matt Fish expands to universities. Max is off to college. Everyone is starting a movement around here. And we can’t stop smiling about it. –Thomas Mulready

There’s something exotic and enigmatic about bellydancing.

For the majority of the public, the dance form seems sexual and foreign, something forbidden yet tantalizing and straight out of a black-and-white Peter Lorre B-movie from the ’40s.

Parma resident and professional bellydancer Farah Page is hoping to change perceptions with a weekend of dance performances and workshops aimed at opening minds…

Cleveland has always loved its burgers and steaks. But recently, more of us have tried to eat a healthier, more varied diet. Cleveland City Council wants to encourage that. It passed a resolution this week urging people to celebrate “Meatless Monday” and praising those working to get us to eat our veggies.

* Some people think you shouldn’t eat any meat at all. They include the producers of the new documentary Cowspiracy: The Sustainability Secret, who say you’re helping ruin the environment by not going vegan. The film has a single screening at the Cedar Lee this week, with Q&A afterward. Thu 8/28.

It’s this simple: I’m fed up. Yes, I’m seen by many to be, as one of my friends put it, “The Social Media King,” but let me tell you: the king is displeased. While I’m not alone in this 21st century revolt, I think I might be the only one who is taking steps away from this social media giant for ethical reasons.

Some may be “too addicted to function,” where as I’m, “too disgusted to function.” Don’t get me wrong. I love social media; I work for an online communications company for God’s sake…

As much as I absolutely abhor violence of any kind, it just may be that the rioting and looting in Ferguson, MO, is serving the useful purpose of focusing world attention on the long-standing and seemingly intractable problem of excessive force against young black males by white police officers…

My Cleveland Wish List
How would the proposed bike midways affect transit service along major transit routes such as St. Clair Ave, Superior Ave, and Lorain Ave? Only having 1 lane for cars and buses on St. Clair would increase congestion and commute times considerably on the highly traveled transit route….
