Modern

We’ve had the good fortune this year to have traveled around these United States: Boston, New York, Portland, Chicago, Seattle, MI, PA, and when you compare, it’s obvious that Cleveland and its region stack up nicely as a contemporary, modern metropolis. We’re onto most urban trends and starting a few of our own: food, biking, rust belt chic.

All things Cleveland are celebrated in Gary Dumm’s Love Letter to Cleveland mural being unveiled this week, featuring CLE icons from Ghoulardi to Jesse Owens, from Superman to Harvey Pekar, from Margaret Hamilton to Screamin’ Jay Hawkins, from Chefs Boyardee to Symon. Modern Painters opens at Rotten Meat Gallery, it’s Grandparents Day at CMNH, and The Great Lake Erie Boat Float enters the waters.

Vanity Crash release a disc, you can write a song at the Gordon Square Farmer’s Market, and the Roar Along the Shore returns. The Cleveland Garlic Festival smells so nice, Bridget D. Ginley explores cyborgian mutation, Arabella Proffer proffers new artwork, and you can pARTy with Phriends to benefit the kids of Providence House.

Don Brown wins $20 just for using the coolest mobile app in Cleveland, and you can too. The CoolCleveland #Hashtag Game gets free publicity for your favorite event: just #CoolCleveland on Instagram or Twitter and tell us what event you love.

Oh, and Cool Cleveland’s got a new modern look. We hope you like it. And we hope you use us to make your life in Cleveland thoroughly up-to-date. –Thomas Mulready

Cleveland is a city of theater, art, music, and movies. We are a city on a lake and our daily lives reflect that too. From world-renowned oil barons to underground comic authors, Cleveland has it all.

Now two of its biggest fans have depicted their love for all things Cleveland across the sky it shares with the Terminal Tower… More from Hollie Gibbs here

United Way of Greater Cleveland has style. Not content to simply issue a press release or call a meeting to announce the goal for their 2013-14 campaign, they insist on throwing a pancake breakfast on Public Square for the entire city each year. The goal is $42,500,000, up 2.6% from last year.

Cool Cleveland was there to talk with Terry Stewart, formerly of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and now one of the co-chairs of the campaign about their audacious goal and all the good United Way does each and every day in our community. UnitedWay.org

Six Versus Twelve
And the Fate of Trayvon Martin

In the wake of the Trayvon Martin verdict, there continues to be a great deal of debate and activism over the merits or demerits of the so-called “stand your ground” law.

While this law is pivotal in cases of self defense and was the focal point of much of the public discourse after the death of the seventeen-year-old Florida youth, there is another aspect of the trial that has been largely overlooked… More from C. Ellen Connally here

Two of Cleveland’s coolest companies got together recently at Walnut Wednesdays, the weekly food truck roundup in Downtown Cleveland, and Cool Cleveland was there to catch the fun.

Listen as Elvis O. Serrano of the Jibaro World Eats food truck and his new brick-and-mortar Pit Stop restaurant shows us how he uses the new EMS+ credit card reader.

With a gang of hungry customers lined up, Elvis and his crew use EMS+ to punch in menu items, scan a customer’s credit card & send them a receipt, all without slowing down the line. With the lowest scan rate in the country (even lower than Square), Elvis will save enough in a year to get a new refrigerator for free. PlusByEMS

Just months after his last solo exhibition, New Works, at The Galleries at Cleveland State, Cleveland’s own Dante Rodriguez presents an even newer body of work this Friday as Modern Painters opens at Rotten Meat Gallery…

Waterloo Road in Collinwood is so torn up at the moment that this month’s “Walk All Over Waterloo” seems a bit ironic.

You kinda have to walk all over Waterloo… You can only drive eastbound. Still, the neighborhood is rewarding visitors with a number of really cool events and promises of more cool things coming soon… Read more from Josh Usmani here

Free Zack Reed
And Put the System on Trial

By using the above cry for justice employed by the angry and the ironic since the 1960s, hopefully I have the attention of both the many outraged by the three-DUI resume of Cleveland’s Ward 2 councilman Zack Reed, and the others who may be more sympathetic to the controversial legislator… More from Larry Durstin here

You might have seen this citizen’s Channel 19 editorial; it starts like this: “I’m Marc Kotora, an owner of Gallucci’s Italian Foods — a small business in Cleveland, Ohio. Today’s welfare system is in direct opposition to the American principles of independence, hard work, and self-reliance.”

All I can say is what a crock of shit…

ROLDO: Gullible’s Travels & Rope-A-Dope Preaching to the converted Roldo. Sin tax. What about the other sins like gluttony. Tax the high end cars, restaurants mink coats and a gazillion other things people don’t need….
Read the comment from Hank Wait here

Of course the tax re-up pitch will be an absurd pack of lies, couched in feel-good ‘sport is life’ metaphors. Only an insane electorate would fall for it….
Read the comment from Allen Freeman here

Cleveland’s Future: Bowling with Strangers The lower west side which you refer to as Ohio city is still mired in poverty, and just like the failed models of post war urban renewal and federal interstate highway construction, gentrification will merely move poverty level citizens into borderline poverty lower middle class neighborhoods which will then slide downhill while the gentrified neighborhood might enjoy a short term uptick at the expense of displaced citizens…
