Linking

People stop us on the street and thank us for curating the weekly e-blast you’re reading, and for making everything easily accessible on their mobile devices. Do you know what a great feeling that is? But we’re not in the habit of making suggestions without offering a link with every post.

So click away as we point you to the newest mountain bike trail in the Metroparks via an interview with Ralph Protano, the guy who lead the team that designed it. And follow the link to learn more about Doubting Thomas’ Ultra Mega Art, or about The Ohio Light Opera’s brilliant 36th season, or some insight on the Greater Cleveland Trails & Greenways Conference, in town this week.

Our Sustenance column offers links to the Downtown Farmers Market, a Photostream from VegFest and even a session on making your own mustard at the Cleveland Flea.

Follow the links to Mansfield’s column on the infamous 137 shots, to kids events like Tailspinner and Parade, to music like Opera Circle and the Kent Folk Fest, and at least a couple of curated links for every day of the week. Let your finger do the clicking. –Thomas Mulready

The goal of this the Greater Cleveland Trails & Greenways Conference is to explore emerging trends in design, build skills for funding and project success and to understand how trails and greenways benefit the economy, environment and health of thriving communities…

Summer’s Here
Melt Bar & Grilled Has the Menu You Crave

What a line up! CoolCleveland Correspondent Marty Bielat met up with Melt Bar & Grilled Owner Matt Fish at his store in Mentor to talk about what’s hot on this summer’s menu. From the way it looked, this season’s menu has to be one of the best yet.

Matt certainly had it right when he said,”It’s a food fiesta” when we were enjoying the sandwiches on their patio. In addition to the sandwiches, it was also nice to hear about his new store close to Easton, in Columbus, and to see a new salad/cocktail combo.

Guitarist John Scofield is a masterful jazz improviser whose music falls somewhere between post-bop jazz and R&B. He has recorded more than 30 albums as a leader and collaborator. Trombone Shorty (Troy Andrews) continues to push the envelope, happily blending jazz, rock ‘n’ roll, soul and that special something that comes out of New Orleans.

The two form a double bill beginning at 7:15PM on Fri 6/27 at the Palace Theatre at part of the 35th annual Tri-C JazzFest. Got your tickets? Get ’em here.

Feel the breeze at the Euclid Wind Festival Sat 4/16. Take a tethered hot air balloon ride, enjoy a concert on the beach, go windsurfing, tour a wind turbine & be breezy.

* Parade the Circle celebrates 25 years of larger-than-life puppets & colorful costumes Sat 6/14.

Check out this video about the 27-day Summer Reading Academy, now in the enviable position of experiencing waves of students attending this summer school program to improve their reading scores.

“In a way it is the kind of problem you want to have, and it’s a good sign that having it right away in the summer will push our numbers up,” said Karen Thompson, deputy chief of curriculum and instruction.

The third-grade reading guarantee means those students must attend, but the good news is the program is also attracting students in Kindergarten through 3rd grade. Watch the video.

It didn’t take gazing into a crystal ball for anyone to prognosticate that more militant members of the black community would mount a protest claiming that justice wasn’t served, and demanding that the other 12 Cleveland police officers involved in the infamous “137 shots” heard virtually round the world be indicted…

MANSFIELD: Tim McGinty – Man in the Middle
I was a police officer in the 70’s. A big part of my training was about use of force laws. We watched films called “shoot, don’t shoot” that showed us the very fine line which allowed an officer to justifiably shoot because they or others were in serious danger, and when not to shoot because the immediate threat had ended….
