Cool Signage at University Circle
We once were lost but now we’re found

A new way-finding system in University Circle makes it easier to get from here to there.

Have you ever gotten lost in University Circle? Don’t feel bad; so has Chris Ronayne. “It happened the first day on my new job,” says the president of University Circle Incorporated.

It could happen to just about anyone. “This is a high-density place with a maze of streets,” Ronayne says. “You can pass through and in moments realize you’re outside the Circle.”

The purple signs that dotted the University Circle landscape for almost 20 years didn’t necessarily ease the confusion. If an institution changed its name or shut its doors, the name could be rubbed off but not totally removed. Recall, if you will, the worn name of Mt. Sinai that could still be made out on signs years after the hospital had closed.

If you’ve been to University Circle in the past month or so, you may have noticed that those purple signs are no more. In their stead is a series of cool, updated signs that could easily be mistaken for sculpture…

That Which Is Old Is Made New
The Rebirth of Dobama Theatre

The walk down the steps feels vaguely familiar, and when you step through the double doors and see the thrust stage and low ceiling, there’s a brief moment of deja vu.

But make no mistake- while the new Dobama Theatre respectfully acknowledges its 50-year history, its leadership is looking towards the future.

There was a time not so long ago where it looked like Dobama might not have much of a future. The theater was without a home for several years and bounced around town, using any performance and rehearsal space it could.

According to Managing Director Dianne Boduszek [pictured, right], things were so bad that when long-time Artistic Director Joyce Casey announced she was retiring in 2007, the theater didn’t have any extra money to put an ad in the paper to hire a new director…

Winter Stardust
A Log Cabin in Peninsula

Diane Seskes’ mother always wanted a log cabin and the family spent long weekends in them.

In November 1996, Diane and her mother Lucille stopped at Joe and Barb Kovach’s tag sale when they were preparing to sell their property. Her mother asked if they could look at the reassembled North Carolina cabins they purchased and restored. Diane says that “When Joe said there was one for sale, Mom turned to me with these wide open blue eyes, and I knew right away that she was going to buy a log cabin. And she did!!!”

They moved it into Diane’s backyard in downtown Peninsula and two days after it was fully reassembled and renovated, a robin built a nest over a beam. That was the sign Diane and Lucille took to mean they made the right decision, like stardust making dreams come true…

Shouldn’t racial exclusion be a thing of the past?

“Where black is the color, where none is the number…”
–Bob Dylan, A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall

We can get glimpses of Americana from various sources. Many of the images paint promising portraits of the nation we wish to become, and others paint portraits of the nation we stupidly still are.

Here’s a true story: Almost a decade ago I purchased a new pickup truck, and when I went to take delivery the salesman had my wife and me pose for a photo beside the vehicle.

A few weeks later a calendar arrived in the mail with the photo attached. However, on four of the dates in each month on the calendar was a photo depicting a different family enjoying themselves in one of the carmaker’s vintage vehicles. Forty-eight photos in all… and all of them of white families…

Cimperman Jumps Out On County Executive Quest

Plus, more…

Cleveland City Councilman Joe Cimperman started his campaign to be the first Cuyahoga County Executive last week. If you don’t think so, you don’t know the ambitious Joe Cimperman.

Cimperman, at a meeting with MMPI’s Mark Falanga two weeks ago asked Falanga if he would commit to having four meeting on the Medical Mart and Convention Center. Cimperman asked at a Council meeting. Anyone listening would have considered the offer and acceptance meant a meeting before City Council members.

Now, however, the scheduling of the four meetings appears to be outside the boundaries of City Council. Each meeting will have an already chosen facilitator, none Council members.

So Council is left OUT. Cimperman’s campaign, however, is indeed very much IN…
