Kulture

We have the luxury at Cool Cleveland, of curating the coming week. You won’t find a comprehensive listing here, or on our mobile app. I daresay you wouldn’t want that; too much information is almost as bad as too little. So we focus on spotlighting the cool, the innovative, the under-appreciated. In other words, kulture, not culture.

So prepare yourself for a big week: Clevelander Mary Bridget Davies closes out her triumphant run in “One Night With Janis Joplin.” See our interview and a review of her new album.

Join the Farmers Market Cash Mob, make food fonts at Shaker Square, play Punk Rock Bingo at the B-Side, do Pop-Up Poetry in the Park with our friend Cavana Faithwalker, and celebrate entrepreneurship and natural resources at the Sunset Clean Fuel Motorcar and Bike Rally on Whiskey Island. Get yer kulture any way you can. –Thomas Mulready

Cleveland native Mary Bridget Davies has returned to the Cleveland area to star in the Cleveland Play House’s production of “One Night With Janis Joplin,” but she made good use of her years in Kansas City, where her new CD was recorded with her band.

As heartfelt as the originals on this release sound, it’s probably the surprising covers on Wanna Feel Somethin‘ that will raise the most eyebrows. Davies and the guys take on the British anthem Wonderwall by Oasis, something we can be sure no English artist would dare. A song that in the US is considered a watered down George Harrison wannabe is turned around by Davies and transformed into a loungy, late night blues sizzler. We challenge you to go back to the original and hear it the same way again after hearing Davies’ version.

Likewise, the Eagles’ bombastic country-rock waltz Take It To The Limit is twisted inside out to the point of unrecognition, to the relief of many, no doubt… Read the complete review here.

You’ve heard the term “less is more,”… but I’m suggesting that “more may mean less.”

The problem in America is not that we have too many mass shootings… it’s that we don’t have enough of them — or, more accurately — we don’t have enough of them in a compressed period of time…
