Cool Cleveland Commentary
Unleash the Creative Person In You
By Marc Majercak

Honestly, when was the last time you turned off the radio in your car and just soaked in your surroundings? I don’t mean stopping to stare at the hottie walking down the street, (even though you might enjoy this) I mean just listening to what is around you. The sound of the wind rolling across your car, the bugs hitting your windshield, that annoying clicking sound from your back seat, the sound of the thumping bass from the car next to you; all these sounds inspire me. First tune-out the world, get relaxed, and then try something new. The world around us is waiting to be explored. Don’t let your ideas be pre-chewed; create your own.

Tune-out We live in a world where everything is done for us; we are an automated society. The supermarket will prepare your shish kebab and your robot vacuum will clean up after you. Your food has been precooked in those microwave dinners which is meant to save you time (this way you can watch more TV!). What reality show will it be tonight? I was going to attempt to list every single show, but I thought I might leave out your favorite. When you watch those reality shows, you are watching someone else’s life go by; don’t let yours. We get lost in the artificial, that’s why our ideas are often stale and just uninspiring. If you take a moment to turn off the world and get off life support, you’ll actually start thinking for yourself. I say try limiting your TV, movies, radio, etc. for a week, and you will see a difference in your creativity. It’s like giving up drinking coffee for a week, either you’ll start drinking it again one day or you’ll find something else to stimulate your brain…

Cleveland jazzer tops New York Times top ten list This list marks the Times critics’ selections of the year’s best jazz music, and Joe Lovano’s quartet made it in a big way with their CD, I’m All For You. Its smoking sax effects and postwar jazz landed the group at the #1 slot. See NY Times here

Campbell’s new Chief of Staff is Chris Ronayne, who previously served as the city’s planning director. He gained experience during his tenure at the Cuyahoga County Planning Commission for two years and worked for the county commissioners for three years. His plan is to continue efforts to tie Cleveland with its lakefront, and maybe now that he is Mayor Jane Campbell’s chief he’ll be able to make more things happen. He also served as Campbell’s campaign manager before becoming planning director, so he’ll probably be running her 2005 re-election campaign as well. See PD here

Best economic development books of 2004 Ed Morrison, who runs the Center for Regional Economic Issues at Case Weatherhead and blogs at EDPro.blogspot.com, reads a lot of books on economic development. Here’s his list of the best of the year, including The Future of Competition by C.K. Prahalad and Venkat Ramaswamy, The Power of Impossible Thinking by Jerry Wind and Colin Crook, and The Creative City by Charles Landry. http://www.edpro.blogspot.com/#books

Rural economies get creative Thanks again to Ed Morrison for pointing us to this report on Advancing Vermont’s Creative Economy, and showing us an alternative to the metrocentric view that only cities can be creative. Replace “Vermont” with “Cleveland” and you’ll see what we mean: “The creative economy is critical to the future competitiveness of Vermont in the global marketplace. Vermont’s heritage, arts and culture are integral strengths. They are an economic sector in Vermont today; they also provide a foundation to the sense of place and creative workforce critical to innovation in other sectors, add value to the Vermont brand, and magnify the attractive power of Vermont as a location to do business. The creative economy is a hidden economic driver, one that deserves understanding, recognition, and investment.” http://www.kse50.com/vcci_report.pdf

Green house hunting In an innovative bid to target a growing market and to differentiate her rental property from the competition, Carolyn Bentley is promoting the first floor unit of her Lakewood triple by focusing on the “green building practices implemented,” the “Low-VOC” [volatile organic compound] paints she used, the “full access to organic garden,” and the rental’s proximity to three bus routes. She’s also starting up a green landlords group in Lakewood. Interested? Call her at 470-1502 and tell her Cool Cleveland sent you.

Give it up for the drummer Eesanajja Grayson, Cleveland’s own prodigal son of the African Dance community lost all of his family’s possessions in a tragic fire, which also destroyed a new drum set. He began under the tutelage of Baba Tanu Leri and the Omo Iroko Company, and was a founding member of Omowale Afrique – later to be renamed African Soul, and was the lead drummer for many years of Dance Africa Dance. If you have ever seen African Dance in Cleveland, you will easily remember the prolific drumming of Eesa. This Thu 12/30, the African Dance Community will be hosting a benefit concert for Eesa and his family at the Thurgood Marshall Recreation Center, East 89th and Hough Ave. at 6PM. Please bring all donations (food, clothes, appliances, etc.) to the event; donations will also be accepted all 7 days of Kwanzaa at the African Soul Kwanzaa Camp at Cory United Methodist Church between the hours of 12 noon and 5PM. The Kwanzaa Camp runs 1/1/05. For more info, email sistajewel@yahoo.com or call 451-7685 and 323-1057.

Generation Jones The largely anonymous, and unfulfilled tail end of the Baby Boomers, born between 1954-1965, has had amazing effects on many things, especially the recent election. This group is identified as “Generation Jones,” (think keeping up with the Joneses, and “jonesing” for more), makes up 26% of the population and voted for George W. Bush in larger numbers than all the other age groups. http://www.JonathanPontell.com/mediacoverage.htm

Cool Cleveland Sounds
Not Tonight Baby, I’ve Got the Blues
Colin Dussault
Erica Records

Not Tonight Baby, I’ve Got the Blues is the latest release from popular

Cleveland-based bar and blues band the Colin Dussault Blues Project. The 13 tracks include six band originals, and studio versions of several of the popular party tunes featured in their live shows. Also included are seven very polished studio versions of a handful of the many covers the band has played live over the years. The band’s musicianship, and the high quality of Dussault’s voice and harmonica playing, really shine on the covers that open and close the album. Van Morrison’s “Crazy Love,” Willie Cross’ “Dead Willie Blues,” and the Robert Johnson standard “Sweet Home Chicago” are outstanding, with Dussault and company making the songs their own. The album closes with four more covers, and again the band, along with some outside help, does a fine job on each of them. Dussault shares vocals with blues diva Becky Boyd on Johnny Cash’s “I Walk the Line;” Boyd joins Mary Bridget Davis and a full Gospel choir to back Dussault and the band on Billy Joe Shaver’s “If I Give My Soul;” and a beautiful, simple arrangement of Bob Dylan’s “It’s All Over Now,” featuring Dussault’s vocals and Greg Hurd’s piano, closes the disk. In between the covers are five band originals, and a cover they might as well call their own. Bass player Fred Tobey does a fine job taking over on vocals on his “12 Step, 12 Bar Blues,” and Dussault and his harmonica take over on the autobiographical “I am a Blues Man” and “Killing Yourself Trying to Make a Living.” “Plastic, Fantastic, Inflatable Datable Girl” and “Ballad of Me and Opie” are party tunes from the band’s live sets, and although well done here seem a bit out of place on this album. Not Tonight Baby, I’ve Got the Blues is more great music from Northern Ohio’s hardest working band, whose popularity is slowly but surely spreading farther from their Cleveland home. http://www.ColinDussault.com. from Cool Cleveland reader Greg Cielec cielec@hotmail.com

Cleveland Crips
A Crip’s View of Cleveland
ADA is Finally Working in Cleveland

What’s it like to be disabled in Cleveland? A Crip’s View of Cleveland will try to answer this. No pity here! Just an insightful, often humorous perspective from a Greater Clevelander who happens to have a disability. This month Rosemary Musachio, confined to a wheelchair due to an accidental birth defect resulting in cerebral palsy, investigates the differently abled in Cool Cleveland. She questions the societal swing of attitudes that are changing because of a law…or because of a handsome companion?! Check out Cool Cleveland’s insider view on the realities of differently abled persons.

Clevelanders are now responding to ADA [Americans With Disabilities Act]; and Lord knows I’ve beaten the topic of attitudinal barriers to the ground since I started my writing career. I have written about how people stared at me while eating in restaurants, how parents used to pull their kids away as if I had the plague, and how some folks used to talk loudly and slowly “at” me. In short, I used to feel like an alien until recently. But a gradual change is occurring within society. I really didn’t notice it until my best friend awakened me to the fact while touring Greater Cleveland during our vacation. People were actually nice and friendly towards me. When we went to KMart and Giant Eagle, customers and employees said, “Hi, how are you?” as they passed us by in the aisles. One gentleman even offered to help us as my best friend was putting me into the car. The same thing happened when we went to the Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame and the Art Museum. We received smiles and greetings from complete strangers. Even the security guard at the Hall of Fame waited with me while my friend pulled up with the car. Besides being nice and courteous, I’ve also noted now that most people who I encounter don’t treat me as if I was retarded…

North Coast Men’s Chorus @Waetjen Auditorium of Cleveland State 12/18
Aptly enough, the festive and colorful program was called Stocking Stuffers, and anyone whose spirits were not improved between the opening and closing numbers could only be called Scrooge! Although it is not considered a professional chorus, the presentation and showmanship of this group could hardly be better than it is. It’s obvious that many (if not all) of the men have had extensive musical experience (or training) and they are all in possession of wonderful voices. They sing together, in tune, and their words are wondrously clear, and easily understood. The added ingredient that produces the magic in their performances is enthusiasm. “I’m Wishing You a Drag Queen Christmas” provided not only a total contrast in musical styles, but also mood, as nine of the men dressed in impressive drag turned the concert into a mini-beauty pageant. There were sequins and feathers and lots of glitter, and even a Mrs. Santa…

On Cleveland’s lakefront Many would think a city nicknamed the home of rock and roll would be bustling with activity. On the contrary, Cleveland, Ohio, primarily the lakefront area, is a ghost town and quite unpleasant after dark. This area needs a nightlife landscape to bring in visitors and people from the outside communities. City planners are once again meeting and deliberating about the future landscape in this section of the city. The controversy stems from the lack of development and activity in the area. There is minimal housing available on the lakefront, and downtown attractions standing solo with no activity around them. The city planners want to take away even more activity from the area by planting trees rather than constructing buildings. Whatever the planners decide, it will impact the city and surrounding communities. Cleveland is in desperate need of a facelift and city planners should open their eyes. The current lakefront area consists mainly of concrete, concrete, and more concrete. Burke Lakefront Airport occupies more than 12,000 feet of prime lakefront property. This area should be used for housing or attractions…
