When we think of superstars we naturally think outside our region. That’s what the bi-coastal media networks have promoted for years. But at CoolCleveland.com, we find for superstars in our own backyard. So we have our share of out-of-towners to showcase: Janis Joplin, Amy Kuney, Pat Dinizio, all welcome as masters at their craft this week. But look a little closer at our regional talent: CPT’s Ray Bobgan, writer Dan Chaon, and our own celebrations of all things literary: Mac’s Backs and The Lit. Plus dozens of cool things to do this week. And don’t forget about our own incomparable Cleveland Orchestra, just back from turning the world on it’s own ear. Our new PBS show, NEOtropolis will also spotlight heroes in our midst: tune in this Fri 11/6 at 9PM for our premiere. In the meantime, master your own universe, and tell us so we can pass on the good news. –Thomas Mulready

Lipstick and Guitar Licks
featuring Amy Kuney

For a long time Streetsboro High School has had one of the more progressive and active language arts programs in the area. It has the state’s best high school radio station in WSTB (88.9 FM), an award winning newspaper and literary journal, and a very active TV production program. The students at Streetsboro can take a wide variety of electives including radio and television programming, desktop publishing, advanced creative writing, and songwriting; and regularly participate in talent shows, poetry slams, music showcases, and dramatic productions. The language arts faculty at Streetsboro includes a former professional journalist, a former professional radio news director and broadcast journalist, a prominent member of the local music scene and independent record label owner, several published authors, and a freelance writer.

To help fund its creative language arts program, Streetsboro’s English Department, with the help of Hudson Community Recreation and Education, is sponsoring a concert of all female singer/songwriters called “Lipstick and Guitar Licks,” featuring national recording artist Amy Kuney, as well as a supporting cast of popular local acts…

Patty Dolan remembrance As the guiding spirit behind not only her black-light troupe The Subliminals, artist Patty Dolan, who recently passed away after a long battle with cancer, also inspired the annual Vaudeville presentations at Cleveland Public Theatre as well as the Performance Art Festival, which I pursued. American Music Master: Janis Joplin

Janis Joplin, in her lifetime, was famous for only about four years. Though she’s still just about as famous as she was when she died, 38 years ago.

In fact, she’s so famous that I’m not going to tell you anything about her. I’m going to let the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame & Museum and Case Western Reserve University do that. Joplin is the subject of this year’s American Music Masters series presented by the two organizations from November 9 through 14.

Now in its 14th year, the series celebrates and studies a pop music pioneer each year though a week or more of lectures, films, panel discussions and performances at the Rock Hall and CWRU, culminating with a full day seminar at CWRU, followed by an all-star tribute concert…

Storytelling
A Review of the Books and Life of Writer Dan Chaon

My first personal encounter with Dan Chaon (his last name is pronounced “Shawn”) was when he appeared on the stairs of Mac’s Backs Books and asked The Lit’s book discussion group if it was safe to come down into the basement.

He said it like he knew we were critiquing his work and it couldn’t all be good, but we welcomed him as the artist he is. He emerged from the stairwell and sat down in the first chair available, the “hot seat,” and waited for his fellow writers to drill him.

It wasn’t the usual book store audience of readers–we wanted to talk about more than the story. We wanted to know HOW he wrote…

Flu Scorecard: H: 1 Author: 0

Well, it’s official – I got it. The disease. The plague. H1N1. In spite of six months of daily media warnings from CNN’s Dr. Sanjay Gupta and countless late night Public Service Announcements from Gary Busey (scary), it still got me. Regular exercise – check. Healthy eating – check. Lots of sleep – check. Resisting the impulse to buy a Brady Quinn jersey – check. Stopping at 8 pieces of bacon – check.

But in the end it didn’t matter, as the Swine Flu – like the Grim Reaper – was coming after me, and there was nothing I could do but welcome him in.

If you’re reading this now, it means that you are lucid AND that you are currently in one of three categories: you’ve already HAD H1N1, you now HAVE it, or you’re GOING to have it. Therefore, in the interest of all parties involved (including rednecks), I’ve decided to save you the time and trouble of going to WebMD.com or to your local clinic, and have compiled the following Self Triage Questionnaire to help determine if you have in fact contracted this dreaded diabolical disease.

You Might Already Have H1N1 if…

Pat Dinizio of The Smithereens is screaming into Cleveland this Sat 11/7 at the Beachland Ballroom at 8PM for “An Evening With Pat Dinizio of the Smithereens,” that includes a cool raffle to benefit the National Autism Association Northeast Ohio Chapter.

Slipshod Police Work?

When the members of the Cleveland Police Department finish taking their self-congratulatory victory laps around the city for capturing alleged serial killer Thomas Sowell, maybe they’ll find time to answer the question that has been reverberating throughout the black community since the story broke:

How could six women (and maybe more), all from pretty much the same neighborhood mind you, vanish into thin air and they didn’t take notice of it for months and months?

If they had been on their job the community could have been put on alert, and perhaps some of the lives could have been saved…
