Sun 2/12 @ 7PM

Trumpet player Dominick Farinacci has gone a long way since his days as a standout in Tri-C’s High School Jazz All-Stars program. He joined the first jazz studies class at the Juilliard School, thanks to a recommendation from Wynton Marsalis, and remained in New York after graduation to take advantage of all the opportunities the city has to offer. His career has taken him from Japan to the Middle East and back to Tri-C again, where he recorded his most recent album Short Stories, released last spring, with veteran producer Tommy LiPuma, himself born and raised in Northeast Ohio.

Despite his globe-trotting, Farinacci finds time to return to Cleveland frequent to perform. He’ll be back at Nighttown for a special “pre-Valentine’’s Day” show, fronting a sextet that also includes drummer Paul Samuels, bassist Aidan Plank, pianist Joe Hunter, sax player Chris Coles and trombonist Mark Mauldin.

For this special “I’ve Got a Spell on You” Valentine’s show, he’ll also be bringing along NYC vocalist Shenel Johns, making her Cleveland debut. In addition to a busy career as a performer, singing jazz, R&B and gospel, paying tribute to influences such as Lena Horne and Billie Holiday, Johns also works in programming at Jazz at Lincoln Center, Harlem Stage and other nonprofit organizations. Tickets are $30.
